Antinous Mondragone - A quiet dialogue with antiquity.

For the past seven months, Drawn Into Antiquity, my solo exhibition at the Hellenic Museum in Melbourne, has brought my graphite drawings into dialogue with the classical works held by the museum.

The exhibition closes on Sunday 19 October.

Drawn Into Antiquity - A solo exhibition by Herk Alexander at the Hellenic Museum, Melbourne

For the past seven months, my graphite drawings inspired by the classical sculptures of the Musée du Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay, have lived within the historic walls of the Hellenic Museum, Melbourne. Presented in quiet dialogue with the museum’s remarkable collection and grand architecture.

When art finds its place among antiquities; following are a few glimpses of the show, in what has been a profound milestone.

For those who haven’t yet experienced the exhibition, I invite you to see the works in person before it draws to a close, on Sunday 18 October 2026.

A quiet Sunday of endurance and introspection. My drawing ‘Musing’ stands in quiet reflection behind a unique sculpture modeled after the head of the horse of Selene, the moon goddess. Showing the strain of its celestial journey-drawing the moon chariot across the sky, with nostrils flaring, eyes bulging, and ears pinned back. The original, from the east pediment of the Parthenon, controversially housed at the British Museum.

The Hippolyte toile in rich raspberry – a standout neoclassical design from the collection and a personal favorite to work with. In my former apartment, together with the Louis XVI-style French armoire, which I lovingly restored and paint finished, they brought a touch of timeless elegance to the room. Originally walnut, this fine piece dates back to the early 20th century.
