I get the impression that you don’t really own it. You have nothing to tell us? For me, there is something stingy about it, maybe. Or almost like, “It’s not worth people being able to understanding it, I’m not giving any kind of key to read it”. You see? In my opinion, the title is really the first tipping point for the viewer. The moment in which the work appears. Then you either understand it more or move away from it.You see, I think there’s a double usefulness to that. And I wondered about the accessibility of art. I think that when you haven’t grown up in an environment where you’ve been educated in viewing art, when you haven’t had the chance to see that kind of thing… People hate abstract art; they think it’s incredibly condescending. But not at all.I was visiting an exhibition of Serge Poliakoff, and at one point in the exhibition there was a quote that was a bit condescending, but still meaningful: in abstract art there are people who see nothing; as for me, it would take three lifetimes to say everything I see.So I wanted to break that notion of abstract art a little and say: actually, it’s going to become figurative. I’m going to be that annoying photographer who says, “Well, here, that’s a tree.” You see? Then you’re going to see the tree, and for someone who likes getting lost in abstraction, it breaks the state of reverie that those people might have. Or like, “that’s a bicycle weaving between cars.” I have to enjoy myself, at the least. If I stop having fun, I move on to something else. You can’t say that about accounting, you know. Hermès Mazlo is Mimosaa’s Member Feature in issue 2 of @souvenirmagazineparis 🇬🇧 - PART IMy name is Hermès Mazlo, I’m an artist, author, painter, illustrator.I work, a little ironically, with the fact that people take themselves too seriously in relation to the world.So I like to play around with that.It really reflects my personality, if I can provoke a curiosity about things that people do or things that I do, artwork, or a type of path that I can explore…See, for example, around us are climbing routes, but from an indoor gym.I also work with memory and archiving.What is strange with climbing is that when you climb indoors, and it’s a pretty trendy sport right now. If you’re Parisian, you climb, and, you know, you get your Kombucha. It’s the package. So I go climbing a lot, and what’s strange is that you have this thing where your memory disappears. Contrary to climbing outdoors where you have this climbing guide called a topo where all of the routes are archived and given names. And it echos my work. I name what I see quite often to kind of demystify the abstract side of each piece, by giving them a figurative aspect with a title. Basically like when you watch the clouds and say, « oh, it’s a dragon ». The more I research and do drafts, the less it works. I often work in the moment, sometimes it comes from an idea, and sometimes from a paint stroke and I think, wow that’s awesome, I’d like to do 10 more like that, and see what happens. This series also comes from an ah-ha moment. From when I was climbing then coming back to the atelier, there’s this kind of muscle memory that comes back while I’m painting. I’m in front of a wall, with my tools, and there are actually things from my session that come back.And I thought it’d be interesting to do a kind of report on this vocabulary that wasn’t mine, and apply it to paper, something I’m at ease with, where I have a technique. I find it pretty ridiculous to try to capture the movement. But it’s something that belongs to all of us, to go all out for something kind of idiotic. But that’s what I like, it’s not condescending, but it’s a kind of critical eye towards certain things. #paris #artist by @hermesmazlo
