Being a Sports Parent Humbled Him — and Made Him a Better Coach | David Farkas

David Farkas has coached youth water polo for 25 years. He knows the theory. He teaches it.

Then he became a sports parent himself — and the mud changed him.

Not because he figured it all out. Because he didn’t. Being in it, living it alongside his own kids, made him realize how hard it actually is to stay on the right side of the line. And that humility is exactly what made his message land differently with other parents.

You can’t really teach this from the outside.

It’s Not Just What to Avoid — Here’s How Parents Can Actually Contribute | David Farkas

Most of the conversation around sports parenting is about what not to do. Don’t yell from the sideline. Don’t pressure your kid. Don’t make it about you.

David Farkas flips it.

Yes, the boundaries matter. But the real question is what parents can actively bring to their athlete’s experience — how they can contribute in a way that builds the kid up instead of getting in the way.

That shift in framing changes everything.

Monday Reset #52: #Burnout

A dad wrote to me last week. His son had played hockey since he was five. At thirteen, he started faking injuries to avoid practice. The dad thought he was lazy.

A few months later, the boy broke down and said: “I haven’t wanted to play in two years. I just didn’t know how to tell you.”

Two years.

Burnout doesn’t announce itself. We picture the kid who explodes and throws his gear in the corner. But most of the time it looks like a kid who is still showing up. Still competing.
Sometimes even improving.

Something behind the eyes has gone quiet. The enthusiasm is gone. The way he talked about his sport on the way to training is gone. The jokes with teammates in the car ride home are gone.

And we miss it, because he is still there. So we keep going. More training. Next tournament. Next season.

Burnout is not weakness, and it is not a lack of commitment. It is what happens when the demands on a child, physical, emotional and competitive, keep exceeding their capacity to recover.

The early signs are small: irritability around training, less talk about sport at home, sleep problems, unexplained aches, going through the motions.
None of them is dramatic. Together, they tell a story.

Your child may not have the words for it. Your job is to create enough safety that they don’t have to perform okayness for you.

Your reset this week: ask one question, and make it feel like there is no wrong answer.

“If you could change one thing about your sport life right now, just one, what would it be?”

Then listen. Without fixing. Without defending. Without reassuring them out of what they said. What they tell you might surprise you.

The kid who feels safe enough to say “I’m not okay” is the kid who doesn’t disappear on you.

What a Billionaire Friend Taught Her About Money | Tyree Dillingham

Most people learn about money from people who don’t have it.

Tyree Dillingham got a different education — up close, from someone who built real wealth. What she took from that relationship wasn’t a formula. It was a mindset shift that changed everything about how she thinks about money, athletes, and what financial freedom actually looks like.

Some lessons you can’t get from a book.

Your Environment Is Shaping You — Choose It on Purpose | Tyree Dillingham

You don’t rise above your environment. You become it.

Tyree Dillingham breaks down one of the most overlooked factors in an athlete’s success — and in anyone’s life: the people around you are shaping your reality whether you’re paying attention or not.

Her move? Spend more time with people who are where you want to be. Not aspirationally. Deliberately.
