KAHIL EL'ZABAR'S ETHNIC HERITAGE ENSEMBLE - Let The Spirit Out / Live at "mu" London (2025 Spiritmuse Records)

The history of the ETHNIC HERITAGE ENSEMBLE goes back more then 50 years in various incarnations but always lead by percussionist KAHIL EL'ZABAR. The album I am showing here is their latest from '25, recorded live in London "to capture the feeling of connectedness in the ancient ritual of communion through music" and this actually sums it up very well how their music sounds. EL'ZABAR is on percussions, kalimba, cayon and vocals, COREY WILKES on trumpet and percussion, ALEX HARDING on baritone sax and ISHMAEL ALI on cello. As stated above the music is very ritualistic, percussive, minimalist, meditative and trance-like but also free and ecstatic! Clearly rooted in the tradition of jazz with their very own interpretations of "Summertime", "Caravan" and WAYNE SHORTER's "Footprints" or their nod to JOHN COLTRANE in "Trane In Mind". This is very unique and fascinating music that is worth and in need of your attention! ❣️
This current incarnation is still playing so take a chance to see them live as I did a couple years ago at @xjazzberlin, you won't regret it!!! 🔥

JOE ARMON-JONES - All The Quiet Part I (2025 Aquarii Records)

I have never really been a big fan of JOE ARMON-JONES' works under his own name honestly. But this album from 2025, split into Parts I and II on two seperate 2LPs, really did it for me!!! Pretty light and breezy but still super deep and soulful modern jazz funk/soul jazz fused heavily with dub/reggae and instrumental hip hop/sampling culture! Long time collaborator NUBYA GARCIA is on tenor and YASMIN LACEY on vocals on one track among others. Fabulous music here and highly recommended!! 🔥

JEFF PARKER ETA IVTET - Happy Today (2026 International Anthem)

I have been playing this new JEFF PARKER album with his ETA IVTET quite a bit after receiving it like 2 weeks ago and I think it's absolutely brilliant! It's the third in that line-up with JAY BELLEROSE on drums/percussion, ANNA BUTTERSS on bass, JOSH JOHNSON on alto sax/electronics and of course PARKER on electric guitar/electronics. Two side long tunes here recorded live in LA in Aug 25, slowly evolving and flowing downtempo grooving pieces, hypnotic and minimal with an almost ambient-ish feel! This is right up my alley at the moment and an absolutely perfect soundtrack for the current heatwave here in Germany! Without a doubt absolutely essential modern contemporary jazz/free improvised music and stellar musicianship of the four here! 🔥🔥🔥

ABDULLAH IBRAHIM - Ekaya (Home) (1984/1986 Ekapa/BlackHawk Records)

ABDULLAH IBRAHIM passed on a couple of days ago at the age of 92 - he was definitely among the greats and clearly one of my favourites in recent years! He released countless albums with incredible forward thinking music since the 60s ... always heartfelt, emotional, joyful, gentle and always genuine combining jazz with his South African musical roots! And "Ekaya" is no exception here, recorded in 1983 with an impressice cast of musicians next to him on piano: CARLOS WARD on alto sax and flute, RICKY FORD on tenor, CHARLES DAVIS on baritone, DICK GRIFFIN on trombone, CECIL MCBEE on bass and BEN RILEY on drums! R.I.P. Maestro! ❣️

DØRGE / BECKER / CARLSEN feat. HAMID DRAKE - La Luna (1987 Olufsen Records)

This is the trio's follow-up album to the one I showed two posts ago, also picked up during our trip to Copenhagen with my girlfriend earlier this year.
The sound here is comparably etheric but a little less ECM-ish but more driving and adventurous in parts, maybe due to HAMID DRAKE taking over the drums guest spot that was held by MARILYN MAZUR on the debut. Side B even starts with a sort of offbeat reggae song with freejazz outbursts followed by one that reminds me a bit of what a group like SONS OF KEMET would do some decades later. And it ends with "A very big Albatros - or was it a Pelican or perhaps Flamingo", a beautiful and meditative 12 + minutes near/middle eastern exploration!
PIERRE DØRGE is on guitar, MORTEN CARLSEN on tenor and bass sax, taragot, nei and Bulgarian kaval flutes, IRENE BECKER on keys and DRAKE also on tablas next to the drums.

TORD GUSTAVSEN - What Was Said (2016 ECM Records)

I dug out this TORD GUSTAVSEN three sided 2LP this morning that I received from a friend upon release and never really got into that much ...
It's a trio setting with GUSTAVSEN on piano, electronics and synth bass, JARLE VESPESTAD on drums and German/Afghan vocalist SIMIN TANDER. Very reduced, lush and dreamy slow tempo interpretations of Norwegian church songs with lyrics sung in English and Paschtu! Not an everyday pick for me but an interesting amd beautiful album by any means!

DØRGE ▪︎ BECKER ▪︎ CARLSEN feat. MARILYN MAZUR - Canoe (1986 Olufsen Records)

This is a record I found during my trip to Kopenhagen with my girlfriend earlier this year for really cheap. I've been a bit familiar with guitarist PIERRE DØRGE through his duo session with Walt Dickerson so it immediately grabbed my attention. It's a trio that recorded two albums in '86 and '87 but is still somehow active in one way or another up to this day!
The music here is nothing short of amazing in my opinion. Very much ECM like moody slightly avantgarde ambient jazz with DØRGE's guitar work that reminds me a bit of Terje Rypdal but not that dark. DØRGE is also on some vocals, Tibetan conch, trumpet, "talking" trumpet, "birdcalls" and mbira; MORTEN CARLSON is on tenor sax, taragot, bass and bass sax; IRENE BECKER is on keyboard. As special guest they have the late MARILYN MAZUR (who sadly passed away in December '25) on drums, percussion and also vocals with one of her first recorded appearances as far as I can recall! 🔥

JOHN SURMAN - Such Winters Of Memory (1983 ECM)

Listening to the PAUL MOTIAN record I posted yesterday made me revisit the two JOHN SURMAN albums I own. This one is as far as I can remember one of my first ECMs I picked up for cheap at a fleamarket literally ages ago. Certainly I couldn't really make up my mind about it musically back then as it is super special and experimental even for ECM standards.
SURMAN on baritone and soprano sax, bass clarinet, synths, piano, recorder and vocals is joined here by the Norwegian singer KARIN KROG on ring modulator, tamboura and also vocals of course and PIERRE FAVRE on drums! What you get here is some ECM style avantgarde jazz mixed with a healthy dose of early ambient/experimental electronics and a vocal performance of mainly KROG and SURMAN that is ranging from rather classic jazz vocals to almost pastoral chorals and chanting.
I absolutely love this record!!! 🔥

PAUL MOTIAN TRIO - Le Voyage (1979 ECM)

I have a couple of cubes in my shelve with records that I still feel the need to examine and absorb more in depth before fileing them away and this one had been in there for quite a bit of time now and I pulled out again yesterday ...
Drummer/percussionist PAUL MOTIAN is accompanied here by J.F. JENNY-CLARK on bass and CHARLES BRACKEEN on tenor and soprano sax and the result is really a textbook example of what many are calling the "ECM Sound" - avantgarde leaning spacious chamber jazz with a production and sound quality that is absolutely exceptional! A bit mysterious and haunting, just like the cover photo and for sure not the easiest listen but so so good!!! 🔥
