How does made-to-measure (MTM) process work?On the first appointment, the plan is set. The client shares their ideas and needs: what kind of garment or attire (e. g. suit) they have in mind, how often the suit will be worn, on what occasions, and so forth.It’s important to communicate ideas clearly and establish a shared vision. The tailor shows the available fabrics, shares their thoughts, and gives guidance (first reel).For my wedding, I wanted to create a black-tie attire with creative elements. Brilliant @jarkkoluotola gave his valuable insights and bounced ideas with me throughout the process.Taking the measurements and selecting all the details usually takes place during the same appointment. With @Herrainpukimo I booked an extra appointment so that I could sleep on the ideas before making any final decisions.For the jacket, I chose this beautiful dark green wool crepe from @HollandandSherrySavileRow (280 gsm / 9 oz). It features a low 4×2 button stance inspired by Bogart’s tux in Casablanca (pic 3). Since I also wanted to wear the jacket as a separate, I opted for peak lapels and mother-of-pearl buttons instead of traditional silk-covered ones. The trousers were made from a classic wool-mohair blend, with double pleats and a grosgrain silk side stripe.Taking measurements (second reel) often starts with trying on a ready-to-wear jacket and trousers. Some tailor shops don’t use any fitting items, but I find it better if they do. The order is placed and the garment is made in the production country, such as Italy, China, or Romania.On the second appointment, the client gets to try on the garment(s) (second reel + pic 4). It’s likely that some adjustments need to be made. With my black-tie attire, we only needed to hem the trousers and take the waist in slightly. The adjustments are made in-house, or the garment is taken to a local tailor.On the third appointment, the garments are ready for a final try-on and for the pickup. It’s such an exciting moment to see the outcome (last three pics). Regarding my creative black-tie attire, I couldn’t have been happier how it turned out.Anyway, that’s the process!
