Subscribe or listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts…wherever you stream! talkingoutyourglass.com/joshua-hershman/ Video courtesy @hershmanglass These are probably the most challenging technical pieces I have ever made. Luckily I had a full team of super talented artists willing to help for three days at Monterey Glassworks. I Could never make work of this scale and complexity without many hands working together. This was a small version, the bigger more complicated ones come out of the kiln tomorrow! Can’t wait to share more of what we made. Very grateful to @volta.n8 @sailorjerryglass @georgewilliambellstudio @ivanleemora @rocketglassworks. Now extensive coldworking will be used to finish the sculptures and join them together into the final forms which are inspired by the most common and important shape in the universe, the torus…. #blownglass #hershmanglass #montereyglassworks #contemporaryglass #messierobjects optics opticalsculpture contemporaryart glassforsale hershmanglass glassofig glass_of_ig talkingoutyourglass glassblowing coldworking glasssculpture torusfield glassart glass_club juxtapoz contemporaryartist blownaway contemporaryartcurator glassybitch artglasscurator mountianglass by @hershmanglass
Loved sitting down with Troy at @aokcreate in my Los Angeles studio to dive into my new series, “Messier Objects,” inspired by the torus - the most common shape found in the universe. When you look at glass, you’re looking at gravity, time, light, and geometry all colliding. As I always say: technique is cheap, inspiration is for amateurs, and the real magic happens when you just get into the studio and put in the work. #JoshHershman #GlassArt #AOKCreate #MessierObjects #StudioVisit GlassBlowing ContemporaryCraft Torus LosAngelesArtist by @hershmanglass

📸 Artist Spotlight: Josh Hershman Meet Joshua Hershman, a contemporary glass artist whose work explores the relationship between light, perception, memory, and photography. Using intricate glass casting and coldworking techniques, Hershman transforms familiar cameras into striking sculptures that challenge how we see and interpret the world around us. Born without peripheral vision or depth perception, Hershman's personal experiences with vision have deeply influenced his artistic practice. His sculptures invite viewers to question how images shape our memories and understanding of reality. Through his innovative approach to glass, Hershman reminds us that seeing and understanding are not always the same thing. How does the material of glass change the way you see through a camera ? by @hershmanglass
It’s a rainy Saturday here in New Zealand. Perfect weather for steaming out this big ol’ mold💨 I’m super excited to be pushing this one step closer to firing in the kiln after working on this design for so long! Holy cow it feels good to be making my own work again! Thanks to @lukekedesign for providing such a sweet studio to complete the final stages of this Canon F1 box!! ❤️📸 #lostwaxcasting #lostwax #sculpture #castglass #canonf1 #foundry #glasscasting #handmade #contemporaryglassart #camera #studioprocess #glassart #fineart #plastermold #moldmaker #moldmaking #waxmelts #bronzefoundry #art #canonphotography #canon #sculptureart #casting #sculptors #siliconemolds #sculpture #newzealand #lukekedesign by @hershmanglass

Well, with my residency here in New Zealand wrapping up, I’d like to express my deepest gratitude to all the generous and supportive friends who have helped this be such a productive time for me. Despite non-stop rain, and working in new studios with new materials, I still managed to get seven works out of the kiln (and an eighth mold in the kiln now cooling)!!! They are going to be acid etched and polished when I return from my adventures to the South Island. Very excited to have had the opportunity to make new work in such an incredible community of people!!! So stoked!!! Big thank you to @fionarennieschwieters @luke_jacomb @lukekedesign, issak and Steven at @monmouthglassstudio @ikatzoff @katherine_rutecki and @simonlewiswards. Looking forward to sharing photos of finished works soon! But first I have to take a much needed break and disappear into nature for a couple weeks. I’ve been working really hard the past two and half months. I’m ready to rest a bit before the next big push…epic new adventures in the horizon…..❤️📸 #lostwaxcasting #lostwax #sculpture #castglass #canonf1 #foundry #glasscasting #handmade #contemporaryglassart #camera #studioprocess #glassart #fineart #plastermold #moldmaker #moldmaking #waxmelts #bronzefoundry #art #canonphotography #canon #sculptureart #casting #sculptors #siliconemolds #sculpture #newzealand by @hershmanglass
Such an inspiring weekend in Venice! Murano is a dream. One month left and I feel like I’m just getting started here. Do I know anybody who can help me with visas for self-employed artists moving to Italy!? 🙏🙏🙏#bullseyeglassco #durmoosh #contemporaryart #hershmanglass #fineart #photography #glassforsale #contemporaryglass #contemporarycraft #contemporarydesign #bullseyeglass #glasscasting #glass_of_ig #glassart #glassporn #castglassart #camera #cameracollector #fineart #glassart #bestofglass #haoaklandartistndmade #castglass #glassart #cameracollection #glass_club #bayareaartist by @hershmanglass

Productive Saturday finally tackling work that’s been sitting with me for way too long. Sometimes my pieces seem to finish themselves effortlessly. Other times, they sit in my collection for years, waiting until they tell me how they need to be completed. I’ve realized I struggle the most with finishing the work I’m really excited about—it’s something I’m learning to push through. This sculpture has been especially tough. I had to force myself back into the cold shop because I was so afraid of fucking it up. It’s strange because I’m usually fearless—diving in headfirst without hesitation. But this one feels different. Today, though, I finally took that first step. Here’s hoping it all comes together. Wish me luck. #wip #glassart #durmoosh #contemporaryglass #glassofig #glass_of_ig #handmade #workworkworkworkwork #madewithlove #coldworking by @hershmanglass
