The past week has been educational, horrifying, and moving beyond belief. I’ve had the immense privilege of going to Poland to bear witness at the camps where my family were degraded, abused, humiliated, exterminated, and more. The experience - the raw horror - at being physically planted at these sites where millions of Jews were murdered for the crime of existing has left me without words.
The beauty of the world around me compared to the man-made horror that also encompassed my space left me feeling an almost paradoxical truth: Love and beauty have not persisted in spite of these deeds, they persist because of them. When Dr. King said “the only way to drive out evil is with light”, he truly meant it.
Finally, I was honored to stand at Auschwitz and share the story of my Grandma and my great-aunt, Peru. The ultimate fuck-you to the אazis was to stand outside of the barracks in which they were held, and share their experiences, and stories - stories of love, and stories of dignity, which, no matter how hard he may have tried, Hіtlеr could never take away from them. A massive thank you, of course, to the GOAT guide, John, and everyone who made this possible and experienced Poland with me.
