Excited to announce my next big adventure!
Starting in August, I’ll be joining the School of Music at California State University, Fullerton as Assistant Professor of Composition–Music Theory! I’m honored to become part of a program known for its excellence in performance, creativity, and inclusivity. I’m especially excited to work alongside such an accomplished and inspiring group of faculty and continue my work on intercultural music and technology.

This new chapter also marks a return to Southern California—after two years of calling Sacramento and Chico home. This was my last week at Butte College, where I’ve had the privilege of teaching music theory and composition, developing new courses and degrees, and learning from both students and colleagues. I’m deeply grateful for the students, colleagues, and friends who shaped my experience here.

Tootiya and I are looking forward to this next chapter—and to reconnecting with the SoCal community that’s long felt like home.

Fullerton—see you soon! @csufmusic

"Although Hesam Abedini is comfortably making music and working as a professor of music and composition at Butte College in Northern California, he’s cognizant of how difficult it is for musicians in Iran to make decisions on what projects to get involved with and what projects to avoid. This complexity, this societal navigation for Iranians who love music, is what made Abedini leave Iran, but it is also what has given him the resolve to 'believe that music is an important tool for empowerment—especially for a community, and, especially, for a dispersed one!'” writes Persis Karim in the latest Iranian Diaspora Spotlight.

"One of the visions that Abedini has strived to build in his musical practice as composer, musician, and teacher is to erode some of the artificial boundaries erected between musical genres and/or traditions. Abedini says that there has 'always been a division between musicians who practice Persian music and those who practice Western music. And this is why I created an intercultural ensemble back in 2007 when I was still a student in the Tehran Music Conservatory.’ Back then, Abedini says he ‘wanted to bring Persian and Western instruments together. A few of the faculty members supported this, but many teachers failed us because they thought we were doing a very bad thing to our traditions,' he adds. But this became the driving energy of Abedini’s musical life— 'to experiment with new ideas, new syntheses, new collaborations and to refuse that border that is so often drawn between and around us,' he adds." You can catch him in two Bay Area upcoming events— a lecture at Stanford University on 2/6 and a performance with his band “Sibarg,” at Red Poppy Art House on 2/21 (two performances). CSUF Music presents an interdisciplinary performance:

CONVERGENCE
TUESDAY • MAY 12, 2026 • 6:30PM • CPAC 272 •
FREE ADMISSION
Directed by Courtney Ozovek (DANCE) & Hesam Abedini (MUSIC)

Convergence is an interdisciplinary collaboration developed within the Dance Composition B course at California State University, Fullerton. The project was conceived and directed by Courtney Ozovek (Dance) in collaboration with Hesam Abedini (Music) and brought to life through the work of student choreographers, composers, conductors, and musicians. Student choreographers were tasked with creating original works through an exploration of personal voice and cultural competency, engaging both independent creative processes and collaborative exchanges with composers. Select works feature live music, composed and performed by CSUF music students, while additional works are presented with curated recorded scores. These collaborations were shaped through ongoing dialogue, allowing artists to navigate shared decision-making, artistic negotiation, and interdisciplinary discovery. This project reflects a shared commitment to interdisciplinary practice, offering students the opportunity to develop their artistic voice while working across disciplines in a dynamic, collaborative environment.

Improvising the In-Between: In Remembrance and Solidarity
@sibargensemble

Improvising the In-Between reflects the mixed feelings that emerge in times of political tension—between fear and hope, distance and belonging, and the public narratives of politics and the private realities of people’s lives. Through Persian/Jazz improvisation, Sibarg Ensemble brings original compositions and traditional melodies reimagined into a shared musical space where difference is not erased but heard. The performance offers unity among people through deep listening—not as a slogan, but as a practice of collaboration and making something new together in real time.

Featuring:

Sara Saberi – oud & vocals
Hesam Abedini – vocals
Dhiren Panikker – piano & keyboard
Rodolfo Zuniga – drums

About Sibarg:
As San Diego Troubadour noted, Sibarg Ensemble embodies “an organic authenticity that reflects strong ties to both traditional Persian music and improvisational aspects of jazz.” Founded in 2008 by vocalist Hesam Abedini at Tehran Music Conservatory, Sibarg broke new ground as both the conservatory’s first intercultural ensemble and the first to bring together students from both the women’s and men’s music schools. Since relocating to the US in 2010, the ensemble has performed at UCLA’s Royce Hall, USC’s Bovard Auditorium, and the Carlsbad Music Festival. Their debut album “Cipher” (2018) exemplifies their dynamic approach to intercultural music-making, where traditional Iranian music and jazz improvisation interweave in an ever-evolving creative dialogue.
