This one feels different.
A little joy. A little melancholy in my glass filled with ginga biri.

Maybe 50 is where you stop running for a second. Where you look back, retrace your steps, and find your way forward again.

I’m grateful. I’m proud.
Proud more so of the people around me. Proud of the ones who stayed, even when I was complicated, distracted, stubborn, disappearing, unavailable.
Thank YOU. ❤️

Maybe 50 is not about becoming fearless.
Far from it.
Perhaps it’s about finally being more afraid of not trying.
All those things I once said I would do have added up to quite a list.

My personal score so far?
Not too bad.

Which leaves plenty of space for:
should do better.
And I will.

So here’s to letting go of who I thought I was, and fearfully, purposefully stepping into what I can still become.

Here’s to resetting the clock at the 50th hour.

Wat een jaar: grote hoogtes zorgen blijkbaar ook voor onmetelijke dieptes. Maar ik ben dankbaar. Voor alle erkenning, voor de ervaringen. Voor de avonturen. En dat ik er nog sta ondanks dat opgeven heel dichtbij kwam. Liefde maakte het verschil en ik wil iedereen bedanken die mij die liefde heeft gegeven. Maar voor wat hoort wat: ik moet, ik wil, ik ga aan de slag moeten met mijn meest uitdagende project tot nu toe: mezelf. Blik naar binnen. Praten. Therapie.
Zo die is eruit. En ik duik erin.

De blik gaat naar binnen dus vanaf nu is er minder kijken naar buiten: online that is. We zien mekaar buiten, hopelijk een stuk sterker dan voorheen en tegelijkertijd ook met meer zelfvertrouwen over onze kwetsbaarheid.
Uiteraard gaat tijdens de verbouwing, de verkoop gewoon door: Buku Films komt en zo ook @the__afronauts, Skiet is er, Knijpen en Big Mountain Sharon… eigen werk eerst.

Ik zeg ook odi tegen @pattarunningteam_rotterdam. Het waren mooie jaren. Nu ben ik weer solo maar nooit alleen.

En oh ja: FREE the people, eet je watermeloen iedere dag en denk aan de kinderen. En een lange middelvinger naar een nieuwe telefoon want C o n g o.

En dan een oproep aan mijn medefilmmakers, maak… en laat JOUW stem horen. Over hoe we ons echt voelen over de staat van de wereld. We gaan het niet veranderen maar een klein duwtje is soms precies goed genoeg. More power to YOU.

Something kind of wonderful…
July 1st, 2025

A day scorched by sun, stilled by wind,
on which a group of riders - of all creeds and colors - set out.
156 kilometers.
Not for glory. Not to prove anything.
Just to remember.
To honor Keti Koti.
To move through space the way so many still cannot: freely.

We cranked our chains in heat that clung like history,
echoing those other chains - once broken, never forgotten.
Because some stories live in the body.
Because some freedoms must be ridden in the present, again and again.

And while we rode,
elsewhere, power moved too.
A court draped a man in near-immunity.
Others - closer to home - rebranded displacement as crime. As if illegality wasn’t already punishment enough.
History never sleeps.

And neither did we.
We rode.
Not in protest, but in presence.
Not as heroes, but as witnesses.

We helped each other finish.
Strangers at sunrise, bound by the the shared push, the same sun.

Maybe that’s it.
The answer.
Not power. Not punishment.
But moving together. Holding space.
One bottle passed.
One quiet “you got this” when the legs begin to fade.

Not grand.
Just a quiet refusal.
A moving memory and possibly
The way forward.

Something kind of wonderful.

Been moving
and making moves.
Out of breath, sometimes.
But never out of purpose.

In on that 50 thing…
not counting down,
but stepping up.
Out of my comfort zone,
into scene and silence,
into body and ‘skinfiri’,
into stories that are made of me.

Somehow acting.

Five whole years.
Like you always say with that sparkle:
“Remember, Dad? Way back when I was little?”
Oh little lady, do I remember.
Like yesterday brushed up against eternity,
and right in the middle, where time holds its breath,
you happened.
Imani Janique Lonwijk.
My storm and my stillness.

So proud of you it echoes in my bones. And when I tell my friends about you, those echoes roll right back around.
When I asked you today why I find you so beautiful,
you started naming your character,
trait by trait… no mention of a mirror.
And that right there is it!
All I ever needed to hear.

Keep seeing yourself from the inside out.

While fascists slowly enter my DM’s again based on a call to action to block a zionist soccer game, top tier emcee Talib Kweli visited the Netherlands yesterday to talk about nazi shit anyway. The first time I saw him I just graduated from grad school; moreover, whenever he talks I feel and know he’s one of them gatekeepers when it comes to personal growth. For me, as a consumer, it’s still so hard to narrate and follow his skillset of flowing in relation to his anticolonial and black spiritual emcee stance and attitude.

Logically he got banned by META multiple times for speaking out. To me though, as a black and brown man, that’s now even the most important part. His personal growth of unlearning actually is. From the gritty begin 90s Rakwus Soundbombing kind of style, he merged and evolved through projects such as Quality, The Beautiful Struggle, Eardrum, Gravitas and all the other collab projects such as the Soulaquarians, Liberation, obviously Blackstar (in my top 3 albums ever in terms of black relevance) and Reflection Eternal into the intersectional being he is today.

He is up there with the likes of Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def), Black Thought (The Roots), Common, Nas, ATCQ, De La Soul, Gang Starr and all the others that’ve shaped the early 90’s into our daily realm.

Check out this speech. Especially white people who think this is just another evening going out trying to detach white supremacy from this beautiful imperfect culture. You’re a guest in your own country when it comes to Hip-Hop. Always remember that. For us black and brown people it is a necessity in terms of healing, acknowledgement, representation and protection. It’s life bound.

Hip-Hop, the real core, is straight up anticolonial politics. So yes Pal3stine. So yes class war. So yes, anti-capitalism. I dont want the rest.

Wat een genoegen kennis te mogen maken met jullie: SAMIRA, TAXI, KAOUTAR, ASHRAF, TONNANO, TATTA, OTTO, BORSU, LENNY, SOESIE, ADIL, KOMTGOED… Nee, het komt nooit meer goed… en toch weer wel.

But we brought it home and now - more than ever - know I am right at home in this world of epic storytelling for big audiences.

Turned 48 today… born at 3:40 on a Sunday morning.

48 years later…
And still haven’t got to the point where I’m the best person I can be…
I am not the best father I need to be…
I am not the best director I want to be…
Not the best runner I ever was…

But it’s okay. Learning along the way that perhaps ’the best’ should not be the end goal.
Perhaps learning how to be me - at 48 - is ‘the best way forward…

Forward I go.

Happy Earthday to the kid who never went away.
Happy to bear witness to that child who’s here now.
