Storytelling in the oral tradition | Myths and stories for the modern mystic. šŸŖ”

✨ ā€œHestia… -- draw near, and withal bestow grace upon my song.ā€ - Homer

Of all the gods and goddesses, says Homer, none was so beloved by humans as Hestia. Yet very little is mentioned of her in the myths. She has no grand adventures or daring deeds to her name. But every meal began by giving her thanks, to her was doffed the first fat dripping off a sacrifice.

So humble a goddess, held in such great honour - why?

Fly with us back in time to when every home, and public building too, had a hearth - this hearth is Hestia’s domain.

She is in fact the very centre of the world. Common and domestic, she provides the foundation for all magic to occur.

It is she who keeps the home fires burning. She who creates the warmth and sustenance humans need. When children married, they took coals from their familial hearth with them. Sacred fire was handed down from generation to generation.

What did people do around those fires?

They told stories.

That’s why we imagine Hestia, goddess of the hearth and its fire, as a patron saint of storytelling. Wisdom, oral tradition, spiritual teaching and camaraderie were passed on around the fire through stories.

This tapestry is called Hestia, Rich in blessings, and it dates from the 6th century. Christianity had long strengthened its hold and banned what it called pagan practices - yet, still, weavers wove Hestia’s name and invoked her blessings.

As do we. May her blessings be with us šŸ™ by @hestiastorytelling

On this very day, millions of people across Turkey, the Balkans, Caucuses and Syria seek out a rose bush to entrust their most dearly held prayers. Some cultural practices are living archeology - they point to a time when ritual, intention and nature were not experienced as separate. Full story on Substack, link in bio! by @hestiastorytelling

🌾 The Goddess & the Grain 🌾

Being a newbie to rural life, I’m only just learning about this fragile little pause before harvest really kicks off. Farmers are hoping for a good crop, praying for clear skies, and waiting to see what the heatwaves and drought will do to the fruit.

Nothing is certain. They (we) are at nature’s mercy. Goodness! ā€œIf anyone knows about being booted from the Garden of Eden, it’s farmers,ā€ as Janine M Benyus says.

This month on Substack we’ve been walking with Demeter, goddess of the harvest. (Later Ceres to the Romans) In alll her facets - compassion, care, rage, and mystery. The final post in the series is up on Substack now (this one’s about rage), and I hope there’s something in it for you. (link in bio!)

May this harvest season be fruitful 🌾 We’ll round things off later this week with some freewriting. Stay tuned :) #demeter #harvest #storytelling #myth #ancientgreece by @hestiastorytelling

Not so easy for me, being quite a Good Girl, to write about rage. But Demeter, that incredibly compassionate, mythological great mother that we're journeying with this month, has this side too - her rage. Does righteous rage have a place? How did we lose our relationship to where food comes from? (This was Demeter's great gift to humanity) How do we come into right relationship with land? How do you relate (or not) to rage - any stories you'd like to share? Read the essay over on SS, link in bio ā¤ļø #demeter #goddess #greece by @hestiastorytelling

I never know what story is going to grab my ear - but this harvest month, I heard Demeter loud and clear. Demeter is sometimes referred to as The Mother, the goddess who loves the fertile earth and taught humans how to farm it respectfully. When I went to Athens, I was determined to find her sanctuary - yes, the site still exists. Also yes, Greece is full of magic like that. Hop on over to SS to hear the story (always free to listen) ā¤ļø #storytelling #demeter #greece by @hestiastorytelling

That time I took a pomegranate from Turkey to Demeter’s temple in Athens. August story is up! As it’s harvest month, a good moment to reflect on Demeter, Greek goddess of the grain. She who loved humans so much, she taught us how agriculture works 🌾 Story over on SS and, as always, free to listen 🩶 #storytelling #myth #demeter #greece by @hestiastorytelling
