one of the best days of my life, at the beach in the hague. we handed in our very last assignment for the year and took a train to the beach for a night. you could power a middle-sized country for a year with the energy and joy of that night if only someone knew how to capture it.

i think she was called dali, but i changed it to dolly because she’s a girl (fun fact: calico colouring is linked to the x chromosome, which is why calico cats are almost always girls! the orange/non-orange colour gene is x-linked, and the white comes from a separate gene).

she didn’t have an owner or a home. she lived in the courtyard of my dorm and was the queen of the entire complex. she had bowls and a bed in the common room, and i’m sure plenty of residents who loved pampering her and taking good care of her.

she spent maybe 2–4 evenings or nights a week at my flat. i’d spot her outside from my window, call her name, and she’d come running up the stairs to the third floor to find me.

this sweet, wild, wise little creature. 🤎

anne, my partner in crime and adventure and joy and wonder and whimsy, my companion for lavender iced lattes and deep conversations, and my fellow traveller through all the storms of intense feelings.

her light and her fire are SO bright. ❤️‍🔥

world cup night with my classmates and what felt like a whole dutch village packed into a house, at one of my lovely classmate’s homes, orange everywhere and the kind of football energy that is completely impossible not to get swept up in. 🇳🇱🧡

I will never feel ready to write this, but after carrying my summer of sorrow quietly for almost a year, it is time to give others the chance to say goodbye to you, too.

Happy first heavenly birthday, wherever you are. I miss you more than words can say.

I hope you are frolicking in a field somewhere, or in fresh, crisp snow, eating all the cucumbers and ice cream in the world, with Mom, the cats, Hippi, and everyone we have loved and lost. I hope Grandma found her way there safely to be with you all, too.

You were so loved by me, by the family we were born into and the family we found, by our friends, and by everyone lucky enough to know you.

If you have any stories, memories or photos of him, I would love to hear or see them if you ever feel like sharing. It would mean the world to me to know all the ways he was loved. 🫶🏼

23 babyyy! 🧚‍♀️🎂 To more waterfall hikes, tutu-wearing occasions, loving so hard it hurts & living loudly. Last year & life after graduation felt like freedom, and to my surprise, it was way more exhilarating than terrifying. I've learned that I literally run on joy and the sense of belonging - 23 is for keeping on cartwheeling my way through the world and loving my people so deeply while I do it. ❤️‍🔥 by @hettemallman

Happy 21st to my favourite person 💜 I'm pretty sure meeting you is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I've said this a million times and will never stop saying it: I'm the number one biggest fan of the UCSB roommate lottery. You, me and Kaitlyn's little matchbox-sized dorm room will forever be my happy place, and you made the other side of the world feel more like home than anything had ever felt like before.

Your light shines so bright and you're incredibly wise, kind and funny. Thank you for everything you are and do. Our adventures and the ordinary, every day life we shared are my favourite memories, and I'm counting down the days until our Europe era starts in January.
