Introducing our Artist in Residence in Rotterdam – 1 September to 31 October ✨

Felix Ermacora is a media and sound artist whose work combines site-specific sound installations, audiovisual performances and experimental artistic practice. Using field recordings, abstract sound compositions and immersive multichannel installations, he explores acoustic environments and the dynamic relationship between humans, technology and nature.

During his residency at @hetwildeweten , Felix will develop new site-specific work inspired by Rotterdam's acoustic density: its harbor, water, wind, machinery and the social spaces in between. Having grown up by the sea and now living and working in Dresden, he is interested in connecting these contrasting environments through sound.

His research asks: How does our place of origin shape the way we perceive sound, and how can this become a spatial artistic practice relevant today?

Felix's work draws on an ever-growing archive of recordings, transforming sounds into immersive sensory experiences that challenge established ways of perceiving the world and invite reflection on our place within it. 🎧

Inviting you to TABERNAKEL, a research film & installation presenting the outcome of my two-month artist residency @hetwildeweten

The film explores my first encounters with Dutch culture through my grandparents when I was a kid: Catholicism, Gazelle bikes, and tablecloths - and how these familiar things found their way back into my practice during my residency in Rotterdam.

Come hang one last time before I leave NL. See you Sunday!

My working period at @hetwildeweten has come to an end, and one of the important results of this residency was the creation and testing of Masking Noise Birds. My idea was simple: a light touch on the embroidery would activate the sound. In practice, it worked, but it turned out to be more challenging technically. Like the image itself—when you touch a small, soft swallow, you don't expect to hear the sharp sound of a drill instead of a mournful song. Anton and I also recorded other sounds—a boiling kettle, a running faucet, or a vacuum cleaner—in our apartment. These domestic sounds, universal in their ordinariness and accessibility, easily mask speech and even drown out thoughts in the head. A handy trick for concealing some secret talking. The image of the swallow, associated in my memory with childhood and Crimean summers, also alludes to one of the most brutal scenes connected with silence in Ovid's Metamorphoses.

I am grateful to @michellevossen_ for sharing the knowledge on conductive textiles during the workshop at @codaapeldoorn and all the visitors of my Open Studio Day at @hetwildeweten for helping with the testing the birds.

I dedicated the second month of my working period at @hetwildeweten to writing. On a freshly sewn tablecloth, I inscribed quotes from books I'd read over the past two years, each describing silence differently. It resulted in a unique swirl of various phrases about communication, emotional state, interior and natural environments, in four languages. My entire concept isn't yet clear and is still in development, but this detail of my future installation is about an internal dialogue, where the personal and subconscious intertwine with the learned and imposed by external systems. While assembling my collection, I also delved into other people's perspectives on the same phenomenon, while keeping my own experience in mind. I also practiced imperfection. I decided to write by hand, which resulted in constant blots and varying letter sizes, where fleeting lightness combined with overzealous tracing of blurry letters. This is how the dialogue with the material unfolded.

You can see the intermediate result tomorrow at @hetwildeweten from 13:00 to 18:00. Address is Robert Fruinstraat 35, Rotterdam.

2 – The quote is from the book “The Silence of the Girls” by Pat Barker.

4 – The quote is from the book “In the Absence of Bombs: Art, War, and Silence” by Pascal Gielen and Bahia Shehab.

7 – The excerpt is from the book “With Her Own Hands: Women Weaving Their Stories” by Nicole Nehrig.

We are very happy to welcome
Sicovecas to our residency at Het Wilde Weten! Sicovecas arrived at the beginning of July and will stay until the end of August.

Sicovecas is a visual artist whose work centres on abstraction, spatial memory and the
textures of lived spaces. Often shortened to ‘As I See (sic)’, his nickname comes from his roots as a
graffiti and street artist and reflects his continued interest in creating art based on his immediate
surroundings.
His interest in spatial memory and ideas of ‘home’ has expanded into a collaborative project, Doewa
Matjan, a platform for street artists in the Netherlands and Indonesia to challenge colonial
narratives and create art that contemplates identity and belonging.
Across media, his work remains raw, abstract, and organic — what he describes as the closest style
to being human.

For his residency at Het Wilde Weten, Sicovecas transforms the studio into a temporary Tabernakel: a place where the street is brought inside instead of being painted on directly.

Over the next two months, he will collect vintage fabrics from friends and kringloopwinkels. The fabrics become his canvas, while the tires of his bicycle become his painting tools. The project grows from childhood memories of his grandparents: his omma selling jajan pasar on a table covered with cloth, his oppa picking him up on an old Gazelle bicycle, and the white linen covering the altar at the Catholic church where he grew up.
