On this day in 1919, William Waldorf Astor died in Brighton.

When Astor first purchased Hever Castle in 1903, it had not been long since farm animals roamed the ground floor of the Castle. Over the next 5 years, he lovingly poured millions into the restoration of the Castle, ensuring Tudor materials and techniques were used to preserve the Castle to its former glory.

Astor built the Astor Wing, a Tudor village behind the Castle and also transformed the surrounding marshland into world-renowned award-winning gardens.

Hever Castle appears as Astor's vision today, allowing his legacy to live on.

We’re on Gardeners’ World! 🌿 @gardenersworldtv

Tune in to BBC Two at 8pm this Friday 16 October to see presenter Jamie Butterworth (@plantsman_jamie) visit Hever Castle and explore Church Gill, our restored valley garden.

With Hever working alongside @kevockgarden this once-overgrown dell has been transformed into a tranquil garden of woodland planting, colourful alpines and flowing streams, making the most of the unique conditions within this historic corner of Hever.

✨ To celebrate our appearance on the programme, we’re also making Gardeners’ World 2-for-1 cards valid throughout Autumn Half Term, including the school holiday dates when they wouldn’t usually be accepted. ✨

Keeping the maze looking this neat is no small job. 🌿

Made up of more than 1,000 individual yew trees, the maze takes our garden team four to six weeks to trim, using a combination of hand shears and mechanical hedge trimmers.

At 80ft square, with almost a quarter of a mile of pathways inside, there’s plenty of hedge to get through! by @hever_castle
