The Classroom Average and the Green Plantations Once upon a time, a school held a competition called the Class Average Score Contest (IHSG). Its scores looked impressive, but a few giant students, influenced by a small group (High Shareholding Concentration, or HSC), contributed up to 18% of the average despite having few toys available to the public. One day, a foreign inspector named Mr. MSCI warned, “Your class average relies too heavily on giants whose scores may be manipulated. Fix this, or your school could face the lowest classification, Standalone Market, and lose global recognition!” Panic spread, and the class average plunged. The principal, representing the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX/BEI), reviewed the rules. Giants failing to meet the standards could be excluded from the average, while remaining free to participate in school activities. Anyone owning more than 1% of the toys would also have to disclose their identity. But one question remains: Is Mr. MSCI always objective and credible? Are his standards fair to everyone, or should his methods and judgments also face scrutiny? Even an inspector’s decisions should not be accepted blindly. Behind the school stood vast green plantations supplying raw materials to major processing companies. Local farmers depended on these industries to sell their fresh fruit bunches and earn a living. As panic weakened the local currency, imported fertilizers, fuel, and machinery threatened to become more expensive. Clearer rules and renewed investor confidence could help companies maintain access to capital, continue operating, and purchase farmers’ harvests. However, local fruit bunch prices still depend on global commodity prices, exchange rates, transport costs, and regional pricing policies. Financial reforms alone cannot guarantee higher or more stable prices. The lesson is simple: reform may bring temporary discomfort, but transparency must apply to everyone, including those who set the rules. A system is truly credible not because its authority demands trust, but because its decisions are fair, transparent, and open to scrutiny—and its impact reaches the people whose livelihoods depend on it. by @hexagon.inst
Once upon a time, a group of children lived in a village surrounded by mountains. They owned a beautiful map showing everything they believed the world contained. “Everything on this map must be true,” one child said. “Look how perfectly it all fits together!” One day, a boy named Joni noticed something strange. The map showed a river flowing east, but the oldest fisherman insisted it flowed west. “Perhaps he is wrong,” the children said. “Our map has always made sense.” Joni wondered, Can something make perfect sense and still be wrong? He climbed the mountain to find out. Beyond the hill, he discovered a forest missing from the map, a river that curved unexpectedly, and distant villages with customs he had never imagined. Some parts of the map were correct, others incomplete, and a few entirely mistaken. When Joni returned, he invited his friends to explore with him. “But what if our map is wrong?” they asked. “Then we can learn,” he replied. “A map should help us understand the world, not replace it.” Together, they questioned old assumptions, searched for evidence, listened to different perspectives, and checked whether their ideas matched reality. They learned that a good explanation must not only be logically consistent but also supported by sound reasons and open to new discoveries. They also realized that their eyes could miss things, their memories could mislead them, and some mysteries were too great to solve alone. They learned to be humble about what they knew, careful about what they believed, and willing to learn from trustworthy sources. Their map gradually changed, yet they never claimed it showed everything. Years later, a child asked Joni, “Do we finally know what the whole world is like?” Joni smiled at the distant mountains. “We know more than before. But the world doesn’t have to fit our map. Our map must keep learning from the world.” He handed the child a compass. “Never be afraid to question your map. But remember, questioning everything doesn’t mean believing nothing. It means searching for what is true, even when the truth asks us to change what we believe.” by @hexagon.inst
