16 years of @thecakabakery ❤️

Last night, over too many drinks, we tried to add up all the special moments this sweet little bakery has been a part of.

How many core memories? Weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, retirements, promotions and everything in between have been sugar-powered by treats these boys and their team lovingly made?

Using some admittedly sketchy calculation techniques, we landed on a conservative estimate that at least 400,000 people have celebrated something with goods from this little enterprise. 400,000!

So last night, it felt pretty special to be among 50 near and dear friends, family and customers and turn the celebration around. To spend a night loving on them the way they’ve loved on all of us for 16 years.

I’ve been lucky enough to have a front-row seat to their magic from the ground up. From day one to now, day 5,840. My wedding cake was the first wedding cake they ever made. From baking out of their home, to movin’ em into (and out of) the windmill on Wealthy, to their gorgeous Fulton Street spot, they’ve learned and grown and changed and iterated together, and with all of us.

@jasonkakabaker and @mypalpeter are such rare gems. One of one, each of them. They broke those molds the second those boys were born. Together they are a beacon of kindness and grace and talent that we are so lucky to have in our community.

They’ve been showing up for me since the day we met. One of the first times I hung out with Peter, he volunteered himself (and Jason) to help at my camp-themed wedding. I’ll never forget them showing up as the cutest camp counselors, two angels in bandanas there to save the day, charm the mothers and aunties, and make sure everything was perfect.

That’s just who they are.

I’m always inspired by the way they show up in the world. Sixteen years of cakes and cookies and celebrations, but more importantly, 16 years of showing up for people and making things special.

What a legacy to be proud of. Love you boys. Here’s to the next 400,000.

Let’s go for a walk in Cadaqués?

@rymurf and I spent a long weekend enjoying this Costa Brava gem in the low season, including a visit to Dalí’s crib. Stay until the end for a fun surprise 🚜.

It’s the last week of July, 1998.
My dad bought a boat—sparkly, red.
On his way to the cabin with his best friend,
he stopped home, gave me a big hug, and said,
“We’ll go out on the boat Sunday when I get back.”

But he didn’t come back.
A heart attack, Saturday morning.
Just like that, he was gone.
And weeks later, so was the boat.

It’s the last week of July, 2025.
I bought a boat. Not sparkly—but also from the ‘90s.
Friday night, we took her out on Glen Lake.
The water calm, the sky soft.
And out there, that memory rose up like a wave.

A quiet thread pulled through time. Connected even all these years later. taken in Glen Arbor, Michigan by @heydaylab

“With you, I pledge to repair one small piece of the world.”

Happy first anniversary, @rymurf ❤️. Two years ago we bought this farmette and one year ago we took this vow - I’m so proud of the care and intention we’ve poured into making this place, and each other, better than we found them. Good things ahead, my love.

Pixel Jean 4/30/10 - 10/24/24 🌈🐾

Born into a family of show dogs, a scratch on her eye got Pixel outcast from their home and brought into ours. Although she never had her moment on the show floor, she was a perfect specimen and a true star. She commanded every room and made sure everyone knew she was the boss.

Pixel liked what she liked — and not much else. Suckling on toys, finding the sunny spot, endlessly sniffing for crumbs, and curating the comfiest places to snooze were her favorite pastimes. Driven by routine, she kept us all on a tight schedule. Dinner was at six sharp, and her eye drops had to be administered exactly five minutes apart. She made sure we stayed on locked in and kept her brothers in line.

Losing her eye in 2022 didn’t slow her down one bit. She stomped around the farmette fearlessly, and if anything dared get in her way (a table, a shoe, or her brother), she made sure to give it the business. Over the years, Pixel’s tough facade softened, and we became inseparable besties. Everywhere I spent time — my desk, my dining chair, my spot on the sofa — had a bed for Pixel, where she would be found curled up and snoring. She took her job as my office admin seriously, often ‘clocking in’ before me. Even on her final day, she worked a full shift.

Despite her Cushing’s diagnosis 18 months ago, Pixel never lost her spark. This summer, regular chiropractic treatments gave us the gift of a vibrant, healthy, and joyful Pixel once again. In September, she fell ill, and the diagnosis was terminal. Her naturopath, Dr. Melling, helped us keep her comfortable as we grappled with the impossible decision of when to help her cross the rainbow bridge. That heartbreaking day came on Thursday, and we said goodbye at home in a calm, cozy setting with candles burning and lo-fi beats gently playing in the background.

We have a Pixel-sized hole in our hearts today and will miss that sweet, sassy girl every day. But now, she’s free: No meds. No eye drops. No fussin’ — just bossin’.

Rest easy, dear Pixel. Until we meet again. ❤️ taken in Rainbow Bridge by @heydaylab
