Long-Jawed Squirrelfish Fry🪸

Life in the paradise of the Red Sea coral reef, is tougher than it looks.
The Long-Jawed Squirrelfish lays thousands of eggs to ensure the survival of the young. The odds of making it through the first couple of days, is incredibly slim.

The biodiversity on a coral reef is incredibly abundant, but that also means a lot of mouths to feed. Everything from crabs, sea slugs, sea stars and shrimp. To almost every fish living there, will eat a vulnerable fish fry if given the chance.

I used a good amount of time observing these fish fry, that was schooling around a small reef pinnacle. Above them was a group of jacks circling around and below them was the protective mother, with her bright red and yellow colors.

I can’t help getting completely immersed in such a small story like this every time I dive.
There’s so many stories being told all at ones on a beautiful reef like this.

Every now and then the jacks would navigate themselves below the reef, like a sparrow hawk flying underneath the hedge, to later on come flying over it with staggering speeds and swallow as many fish fry as possible. The mother would stand zero change, in trying to protect the juveniles.
