Come on a full low wind Kihei and Orca 800 demo run with me. Today was an ideal demo day because it was pretty light and most peeps wouldn’t go. The run starts with the wind coming off the beach so there are no bumps. The flat water gradually builds into fun bumps miles offshore, you can see I had to pump a mile or two until the bumps built enough height for me to glide on them.
I’m with my buddies Dustin @dlsspy and Jeff @kiteflyah808 and met Brian @booo_rye_onn mid channel. I overshot my intended Wailea Beach landing because I blew the landmarks and came in a couple miles down.
The Orca 800 was awesome. The flat water paddle up was probably easier than my Orca 900 because it has sufficient lift for my 137lb and has less drag than the bigger foil. It may be my ideal low wind foil over the larger 900. Riding the Orca 800 is a dream, you don’t need to think about it, it just does and goes wherever you want it. The glide, low end, and turning are awesome.
The slapping noise in the videos is my leash hitting my board when I pump.

I test drove a F4 Piranha 600 and felt its potential to carve but that day Maliko just felt like a drag strip. I think it was a better day to demo a hammerhead.

It was fun to have Maui friends visiting Santa Barbara for a downwind run! Our (attempted) run from UCSB to Montecito started off bombing with everyone hoot’n and holler’n but off Santa Barbara the wind died. The ocean instantly glassed off and even turned around to where we had bumps and wind in our face. We all had some good paddling in to different beaches. Luckily I called Lainie on my paddle in with Larame and she beat us to the beach with my van. Maui in July was the ultimate summer camp. I went on more downwind runs than the number of days I was there and the indication that I have gotten better is the fact that I never took Advil! The month of foiling with my awesome friends culminated with the Maui to Molokai race. For me it wasn’t a race (I know my place) but it was an adventure (channel crossing) I wanted to check the box as validation that I exist in this sport. I appreciated being in the water with the real world contenders of the awesome sport. I achieved my goal of happily finishing the race respectfully. I had probably the best run of my life and was thrilled the entire race…until the finish. I grossly over shot the finish and ended up a couple of miles offshore crosswind to the finish. I had to sit down and butt paddle for a mile or so but I made it to the finish. It was a pretty cool experience and I know I want to do it again! by @heyron_sb

There was no wind and the bumps were super small so what do we call it?…a 1 out of 10? But it was totally foilable, we had clean 12 mile runs, and it was pretty darn fun!…So it was actually a 9 for a 1 so what do we call that!? No winders are a whole different sport.

Santa Barbara downwind runs are really becoming a thing especially with the new boards, foils, and software update. Larame said we don’t even check the wind anymore..we just go.

Thanks to @paddleimua for putting on such an awesome event last Sunday (downwind race)! Although I raced and it was super fun, but more so in hindsight 🤣, these photos capture the best part of the whole event for me. These photos are all I need to remember this awesome day and there’s not a single water shot or race picture. Unfortunately I didn’t come across a lot of my friends for a picture.
