Medieval Religious Symbolism Tour
Saturday 17 October, 12noon.

Only a few tickets left!
This tour will use images in the stonework, the woodwork and the stained glass in this ancient cathedral to explore the workings of the medieval mind. Why did they believe what they did? Does the fact that they held beliefs which may seem absurd to us mean that they were less intelligent than us? Why are the hands of so many of the effigies damaged? Why are there so many effigies of lions? Why are some lions good and some evil – and how do you tell them apart? What are basilisks and what are they doing on the shrine of St. Thomas? So many questions; and there are many more. Come and hear the answers - and prepare to be amazed!

Tickets:
Adult: £10
Student: £8
Child (8–16): £5

Tickets can be booked online, from the Cathedral ticket desk, or by telephone on 01432 374 202. by @hfdcathedral

Seeking hope amidst ‘wars and rumours of wars’
Tuesday 12 January, 7 pm

This lecture will explore the challenges and opportunities confronted by Army Chaplains in their calling to serve soldiers and their families.
When the Revd Richard Hall CF became an Army Chaplain, he was offered the following advice which had first been given in 1916:

“Live with the men, go everywhere they go. Make up your mind you will share all their risks, and more, if you can do any good…. Take a box of fags in your haversack, and a great deal of love in your heart…. You can pray with them sometimes, but pray for them always.”

In this talk Richard/Padre Hall will talk about the inspiration he has drawn from those words throughout the years and his belief that army chaplains can be well placed to bring hope into apparently hopeless places;

“I’m a priest because I believe humanity needs priests, and I’m a padre because I believe that soldiers need them more than most.”

Tickets cost £12 and are available to book online or from the Cathedral Ticket Desk, in person or by telephone on 01432 374 202. by @hfdcathedral
