Before the Shine: The Foundation of Chinese Lacquer

Before the colors and patterns come the layers you’ll never see.

Here, we reinforce a flower-shaped wooden tray with fabric and apply a ground made with natural raw lacquer. Each stage needs time to cure before the next can begin.

Good lacquerware takes time, even before its beauty begins to show.

The first sanding reveals what the layers have been hiding.

Watch the pattern emerge as we sand back a blue rhino skin lacquer (Xipi) pedestal dish by hand. Every layer built up over weeks is now slowly coming to light.

Still more sanding ahead, but this is where the pattern first shows.

Green to black, then back to green.

This wooden horse starts with a raised green texture. We cover it in black lacquer, let it dry, then sand it back by hand until the pattern emerges. Every swirl is revealed, not painted.

This is rhino skin lacquer (Xipi): layers built up over time and sanded to reveal what’s underneath.

Before the smooth finish comes a little roughness.

Watch how rhino skin lacquer (Xipi) begins: we prepare the colored lacquer and build a raised texture by hand on a wooden horse.

The texture you see now will eventually guide the patterns revealed through layers of lacquer and careful sanding.

Still a long way from finished. But this is where its character begins.

You don’t really know what Xipi lacquer will look like until you polish it.

The texture isn’t painted on, and it isn’t carved.

It is built — mound by mound, layer by layer.

Then comes the polishing.

Little by little, the lacquer is worn away, and the hidden peaks, valleys, colors, and layers begin to appear.

What was decided long before is finally revealed.

That is the part of Xipi lacquer we wait for most.

Xipi Lacquer | Before the Pattern Appears

No drawing. No carving.

What you see here may look random.
But this is where every Xipi pattern begins.

Each raised line is built up by hand, one by one, with thick lacquer. This process is called dian (埝).

Then it is left to cure.
No rushing. No shortcuts.

More layers of lacquer are applied, one after another, until everything underneath is completely covered.

And then comes the part that changes everything:

the surface is slowly ground down by hand.

The pattern isn’t painted on.
It isn‘t carved in.

It is revealed.
