It’s been a whole year now since this magical day at Bantham, and it’s still THE session that is permanently engraved in my mind.
The evening of the 20th, I put a message out looking for someone to surf with. Only one person replied — @harrybxshp. When I woke up on the 21st, my room felt painfully cold, and even though my blind was open, I couldn’t see anything through my skylight. I got up, opened it properly, and realised everything was covered in a fresh layer of snow. At 10:00, I sent Harry a message saying the surf was off — I couldn’t even get my car out of the driveway.
Gutted that the snow had ruined my surf plans for the day, I headed onto campus for a lab practical and watched the snow keep falling outside. On my walk home I noticed the gritters were out and the roads were slowly starting to clear as traffic ran over the snow turning it to slush. I checked maps and recent traffic news, trying to find any sign of closures or accidents, but there was nothing. By 11:55, after some enthusiastic persuasion from Harry, I decided to give it a go. i cleared the snow off my car chucked in my board and camera, picked up harry and begun our journey south.
The roads were still sketchy, and I was already stressing about the drive home with temperatures dropping again after sunset and the potential icy roads that awaited me. But the second we walked up over the beach and saw clean barrels reeling off next to Burgh Island — with hardly anyone out (a rare sight for Bantham) — every bit of worry disappeared.
I went out on my board first, took a few beatings and barely caught anything but I was enjoying watching the waves reel. The sun peeked out from below a clouds and the barrels turned to a deep emerald green and I knew I had to get my camera, not realising I was about to capture some of my best photos to date.

Introducing the man behind the lens – Henry Plewes(HGP.captures)
Probably should’ve done this a while ago... but better late than never!
For those who don’t know me, I’m Henry – originally from a small town in Hampshire, now a student at the University of Exeter. Since moving to Devon, my love for the ocean quickly led me to surfing and photography. When I saw people taking surf shots in the water on Instagram, I made it my mission to be one of them — and I’m partway there!
You’ll usually find me either swimming in the surf with a bright orange helmet (complete with yellow go-faster stripes) or tucked away on a cliff with a long lens trying to capture some obscure angle. I surf too, so I’m often torn between picking up my board or my camera — but if I’m near the ocean, I’m happy and frothing.
When the waves go flat, I chase other adventures: wild camping, hiking, or cheeky trips to Wales for a change of scene. I’ve also got a passion for travel, from quick getaways to Morocco and Portugal to big adventures as far as Indonesia — and I always bring my camera along to capture and share the experience.

An image without colour is one without distraction. It creates a relationship without simple attraction, but forces a deeper connection, one that speaks to the soul.

These images look amazing in colour too but when reverted to simple light and dark they speak so much louder.
