View painting at Oxford Gallery “The Faces and Facets of Freedom” thru June 13. My Frederick Douglass painting was inspired by our local Rochester statue honoring the great abolitionist & activist who lived here from 1847–1872. This is where he published The North Star, his anti-slavery newspaper, helped people escaping slavery through the Underground Railroad, and became one of the nation’s leading voices for equal rights and the end of slavery. The original monument, unveiled in Rochester in 1899 four years after Douglass’s death, was the first public monument in the US dedicated to an African American.

Only two years apart in age, Douglass worked closely with Susan B. Anthony, who lived in Rochester from the 1840s until her death in 1906. The abolitionist and women’s suffrage movements grew side by side. They are both buried in our historic Mt. Hope Cemetery, one of the first Victorian garden cemeteries in the US, less than 1 mile from my home.

I went down the rabbit hole doing research to prep for this post, learning many interesting details. I bet you weren’t expecting a history lesson from me, but there you go! I commend you if you read the whole thing. If you come the next First Friday, June 5, ask me what fun facts I DIDN’T include.

The completion of this painting was inspired by a couple of months I spent in Bali two years ago. The first application of paint, the funnest, loosest layer to do, went down before I left on the trip. When I returned, it felt like a perfect base for the water, purple sky, and feeling I envisioned for the canvas. The images that follow are a small selection of the inspiration I found in Bali.

The current large-scale paintings I’ve been working on were inspired by a couple months spent in Bali in 2024. The warmth, vibrant colors, floral & fruit scents, the water, the sunsets - all become part of this series. Stay tuned for the next in the series to be done by Jan 2 First Friday. It’s the same size and similar inspiration but TOTALLY different.

This new painting began as rocks, but I couldn’t ignore what I kept noticing. Even as I rotated it, I always came back to this alignment. Will other people see it? Will I want them to?

In early 2024 I traveled to Sydney, Australia, for three weeks. I stayed in the historic district downtown called The Rocks. Popular swimming spots ranged from small rock coves cordoned off with shark nets, to larger saltwater pools built right into the rocks at the edge of the sea.

After a long stretch of feeling unresolved while working on this piece, I took a bold step — laying down a block of transparent magenta from a tube of paint I’d bought in Sydney: ‘Australian Red.’

That was the moment it was finished — and got its name. I’d unexpectedly straddled the line between abstract and ______________. (Look at the painting first — what do you see? Scroll to the last word of this post to find what I saw.)
