Today, two stories meet on one date: the story of Nigeria’s freedom and the story of coffee. 🇳🇬☕️
On 1 October 1960, Nigeria became independent. Sixty-six years later, we celebrate not only how far our nation has come, but the remarkable diversity, resilience and resourcefulness that have always been part of the Nigerian story.
And on International Coffee Day, we remember that coffee is not foreign to our soil. Nigeria’s coffee story stretches back more than a century, with historical records documenting coffee exports as early as 1896. Over time, coffee cultivation became part of Nigeria’s agricultural landscape alongside crops such as cocoa, palm produce and cotton.
From the cool highlands of Taraba’s Mambilla Plateau, where Arabica coffee thrives, to coffee-growing communities across Cross River, Plateau, Bauchi, Oyo, Abia, Ekiti, Ondo, Delta, Kwara, Ogun, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Kogi and Edo, Nigerian coffee reflects the remarkable range of our land and people.
Think about that for a moment.
Different soils.
Different climates.
Different languages.
Different cultures.
Different communities.
One Nigeria. 🇳🇬
And somehow, from all that diversity comes something beautifully familiar: the Nigerian coffee bean.
Today, we celebrate the farmers who nurture it, the communities that grow it, the people who process it, the entrepreneurs building with it, and everyone working to give Nigerian coffee a place at tables around the world.
Because independence is not only about where we came from.
It is also about what we can build with what is already ours.
So today, as we raise our cups, let us raise them to Nigeria — our land, our people, our farmers and our coffee.

From Nigerian soil to Nigerian cups and, one day, to cups around the world.
