You may remember the hazy days of your youth consisted of scrolling through Tumblr, soundtracked by a certain woozy indie band — the kings of Indie Sleaze, Swim Deep.

Lucky enough for you, Swim Deep are releasing their 5th studio album, Hum, on the 19th of June via Submarine Cat. The album is an introspective kaleidoscope of contrasting emotions regarding family ties, new life, and the loss of life. In the same month that Austin Williams’ first child, Mary, was born, William’s partner Nell experienced the tragic loss of her father, which created a seismic life event that heavily impacted the album. Sonically, the record is a defiant cut of alternative rock, clouded by distortion, and it certainly lands with a bite against the chiming melodies. It is the band’s heaviest, most adventurous, and most uplifting album in years, reflecting a group still chasing their dreams with conviction, but now with something much deeper at stake.

We had the honour of sitting down with @swimdeepbaby ahead of their 5th album ‘Hum’ releasing on the 19th of June.

The tension broke on final track ‘Animal’. With Dead Pages’ Gus White joining on kick drum and percussion, Ann tells the packed room, “it’s so special to give these songs an audience” – before launching into an energetic finale with the passion and confidence of an artist that is making some of their best music so far.

“I’m working with people that are aligned, and supported by a community that feels aligned”, Ann shared earlier in the evening. Having seen her never-before-heard songs being cheered on by friends, family – and the community of musicians who share the same stages, sounds, and philosophies – tonight felt like proof of this alignment.

2000 Trees then, emerged successful by all accounts, creating a communal spirit that led to arguably, the friendliest festival that I’ve ever been to. A barnstorming year with great names that overcame all the obstacles: possibly the weirdest Trees in recent memory, but one of the more memorable ones – Battlesnake, The Scratch, Arcane Roots, PUP, Greywind and more all delivering for a memorable evening as emerging highlights. Few can deny the star power and raw hunger of Native James –

and if you haven’t caught a Knives set, simply – what are you doing?

@milomjafc shares his full weekend account of this years @2000trees_festival - read all about it via the link in bio.

That unpredictability is precisely what makes Big Thief such a rewarding live band. The set moved with remarkable patience, songs arriving with little introduction and often bleeding into one another. Much of the beauty came from that looseness: the sense that everything could either collapse entirely or become transcendent at any moment.

@oedipusandthemamasboys share new single ‘A Daisy For You, John’

It’s encouraging to see emerging bands still willing to be ambitious, pushing beyond the industry’s increasingly rigid expectations around song length. Some of the most exciting debut releases in recent years have arrived in sprawling, unconventional forms, from Fat Dog’s seven-minute debut single King of the Slugs to Black Country, New Road’s eight-minute breakthrough Sunglasses. Now, Oedipus & The Mama’s Boys can be added to that list, delivering a bold six-minute epic that prioritises artistic expression over streaming-era conventions.

A departure from The Shades’ first EP Grin & Bare It, Shifting Sands marks a noticeable shift in tone and texture. Where the earlier record leaned into a certain jauntiness and outward energy, this release brings a gentler, more restrained tenderness. Now operating as a quartet, the South London-based band; Sasha Adamczewski (vocals, guitar), Eli Rose J. Sanford (vocals), Johnny Payne (fiddle), and Jimmy Dawkins (double bass), the band find their sound necessarily, and perhaps deliberately paired back.

Late Spring Folk Festival: grassroots and community

Folk music is in an interesting place. From the folk clubs sprouting across London, to the acts that are taking the genre forward, there is a palpable craving for folk culture – whether it is songs, spells, or traditions that carve a path to our collective past. The Late Spring Folk Festival, which was started in 2022 by members of the Wiltshire folk band Dead Pages, captures this reverence. Beginning as a free event at a pub, it has since blossomed to a nearly one-thousand capacity one-day event on a farm and brewery in Hampshire. It’s truly grassroots – with friends and artists helping to make the day a success. It felt like the lineup, including folk artists playing alongside country, indie, and americana acts, as well as rising singer-songwriters, demonstrated the wide influence of folk music. With this in mind, I was excited to see what the music had to say.

The Great Escape @greatescapefest provides a 4-day showcase for the best of the music scene up and comers featuring spellbinding performances from the likes of Madra Salach, @madrasalach_ Jamie Lenman @jamielenman and Gurriers @gurriersband

We sent @milomjafc down to TGE this year and here is what he had to say about the epic festival for celebrating new music!

“It becomes immediately clear when you get to The Great Escape that plans don’t survive contact with the sprawling multi-venue industry festival that makes use of pretty much everywhere big enough to fit at least two people and a guitar; there are hot-ticket acts and they will go fast.“
