Forbidden Canyon, water level is low. Typically the dock is linked with the shoreline. At this level the dock is no longer connected to the shoreline. The NPS has pulled it back into deeper water so it continues to float and not get stranded as the water levels fluctuate.

Tour boats are no longer making the daily trek from Wahweap Marina at this level. We idle around the flotilla, I trim the prop as we glide towards the bank. We beach the speedboat without incident. Monsoonal moisture in the air, the sweet smell of tamarisk flooding our senses.

Not 100 yards into our hike, we came upon a pack of all female big horn sheep—aka a band— grazing on the canyon floor. The dominant ewe saw me first, while the rest of the pack kept grazing. She locked eyes with me, and quickly decided to move the band to safety. The band followed her lead without ever looking back. What a beautiful orchestrated movement.

In 9 years of visiting the lake, this was my second big horn sheep sighting. The last was a pack double the size and led by a majestic Ram. No place on earth like Lake Powell. ❤️

I’m obsessed with this analog piece of art. Located at the Powell Museum & Archives.

The map was created by artist Robert S. Miller and first found its home at the Carl Hayden Visitor Center in 1967. Spanning 13 feet by 19 feet, the map was hand-carved with dental tools and made to scale. Including Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Lake Powell, the map covers three national parks, four national monuments, two Navajo tribal parks, two state parks, six rivers, and five mountains. The map was constructed of isocyanate foam, and is highly fragile, requiring specific climate-controlled conditions to maintain its integrity.
