POSTS STORIES REELS

Oktober was paddenstoelenmaand!

Many thanks to the @societybotanicalartists for featuring my journey of writing my first book in their autumn magazine. It’s wonderful to see this very personal journey shared with the SBA community.

I’ve just come back from a wonderful week in Romania at the Transylvanian School of Botanical Art in Copșa Mare.

James and Rachel have created a truly unique project: documenting and preserving the local flora while promoting the art of botanical illustration. I feel very grateful to have been part of it.

I also had the privilege of following a masterclass with Margaret Best, a wonderful and dedicated teacher from whom I learned so much.

Thank you all for this memorable week! It was a pleasure getting to know you, sharing experiences and listening to all your fascinating stories. I’m taking home not only new knowledge and inspiration, but also many beautiful memories.

Stella Ross-Craig (1906–2006)
One of the great names in 20th-century botanical illustration. Stella Ross-Craig worked for many years at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where she combined botanical knowledge with remarkable artistic skill.
Her best-known achievement is Drawings of British Plants: an impressive 31-volume series containing more than 1,300 botanical plates. Her distinctive black-and-white pen drawings are precise, elegant and exceptionally rich in botanical detail.
Ross-Craig also produced beautiful watercolours and more than 200 illustrations for Curtis’s Botanical Magazine.
For her, botanical drawing was above all a way of observing, understanding and scientifically documenting plants.
I’ve just added 29 volumes of her collected works to my library.
A little piece of botanical illustration history that has now landed right on my desk. by @hildeorye

Based on molecular and morphological data a new species of Breynia, B. aberrans, is described from Kaeng Krachan National Park (SW Thailand), along the Thai border with Myanmar. An earlier published phylogenetic reconstruction of two nuclear (ITS, PHYC) and three chloroplast markers (matK, accD-psaI, trnS-trnG) placed the new species in Breynia subgenus Sauropus. Typical are the asperities along the branches on one side, the shape of the leaf blades and the pistillate flowers with a long-ovoid ovary ending in a sturdy style and three upright stigmas. This type of pistillate flower is rather unique within Breynia and almost certainly not pollinated by Epicephala moths.

Is mijn boek stuk?
Nee. Is het bijzonder? Absoluut! 😄

A little beauty, always close
I have always loved beautiful things. Some of them have found a permanent place on my desk, where I can enjoy them every day.
And now, one more beautiful thing has joined them: my new personalized phone case from Case Companyworld.
The pattern on the case is one of my botanical illustrations, originally created for a workshop I gave a couple of years ago. I love seeing it in a completely different form — something I can carry with me every day.
If you’d like to have your own personalized phone case, you should definitely check out @casecompanyworld. You can turn a favourite image, illustration or memory into something you carry with you wherever you go.
What beautiful things do you like to keep close to you?
