Making a little of this. A little of that. Probably cleaning up the mess of this and that. | Mixed media artist just finding her voice and courage.

I wanted to do something that celebrated Dolly. I had this exciting idea to have a whole Celebration of Life service. Respectful but fun. Meaningful but playful.

Normally I’d overthink it and get paralyzed, worry what others think and not have my heart in it, or I wouldn’t have followed through without some external validation. But I’ve learned to let go a little bit… well at least last weekend I could. Because every day is a struggle. Every piece of paper I cut, every idea that pops up, and every piece I finish, I have to fight through the lack of trust I have in myself to finding something beautiful and freeing if I just let go. Because letting go and being playful is the key to your dreams! Cheesy, but true!

My friends and I held a beautiful Celebration of Life service for Dolly (they really showed up for Dolly and me), and it’s like she said… the magic is in me, there ain’t no crystal ball.

If you want to fight the good fight to letting go, join me and @mamahawkdraws_ for what we’re calling Creative Recess. Monthly we’ll get playful with our creativity and talk about how easy or hard or whatever it is like for you to be a colorful, quirky, artsy fartsy spirit. Devastated by the news of Dolly yesterday. I initially had an idea in my mind that didn’t look like this. I thought of having big, blonde hair at the bottom of this card with a butterfly and maybe a rainbow. And as I was listening to her music and thumbing through old magazines I came across this page with a patchwork blanket and thought how serendipitous! She is loved and missed. 🦋 #mixedmedia #collageartist #collage by @hillaryryanart

After a two-week trip to Iceland and a week long post-cold that just wouldn’t stop… I needed to get my scraps together. Now something I’ve learned on my collage quest is… I am not alone in thinking every scrap can be saved. What I haven’t seen is a ton of ways people keep their scraps organized. So I put my many brain cells together and came up with a plan. And I got to work. Stay until the end and get a glimpse of my pup. #mixedmedia #collageartist #recycledart by @hillaryryanart

Have you ever noticed that somewhere along the way, creativity starts to feel like work?

We tell ourselves it has to be productive. Or beautiful. Or worth sharing.

Creative Recess is an invitation to set all of that down.

Once a month, we'll gather at Tanglewood for conversation, connection, and a hands-on creative exploration designed to spark curiosity rather than perfection. Each session will be a little different, with a new idea to explore and something new to make.

Whether you haven’t picked up a paintbrush in years or you’re a practicing artist looking to reconnect with the joy of creating, we’d love to have you around the table.

Our first meet-up begins September 22 and we’d love to have you join us. Link in bio to register.

Another piece with recycled album covers made its debut at @maconarts. I started off doing this as just a cool girl having a great day. And huffed under my breath, “Yeah on anxiety meds and a prayer.” So here we are, having a good day, raining meds to get you by in this 🍌 world we live in. Up close pics soon so you can read what these magical pills bring said cool girl. Now, go take your meds and seize the day. #collageartist #collageartwork #mixedmedia #recycledart by @hillaryryanart

My first piece of art to get sold! @mamahawkdraws_ just giving me courage and platform @tanglewoodartstudios . Would you believe me if once I finished this I said, “I’m going to make an even more perfect one.” 🙄 #collageart #collageartist #mixedmedia #recycledart by @hillaryryanart

Some behind the scenes of my process. Most who know me know I like things clean. So it’s a little hilarious that I’m currently working on art that makes a total mess. I could barely share these so of course I added a clean unsurprisingly yellow background. I can only try so much. #collageart #collageartist #mixedmedia #recycledart by @hillaryryanart

I bought record albums intending to paint something cool for @tanglewoodartstudios art show, Sound Check. Ended up being drawn to the colors of the albums and went for a mixed media! #collageart #mixedmedia #collageartist #recycledart by @hillaryryanart
