“I am interested in finding beauty through simplicity. At Arancia Yards, we used carefully composed volumes, layered terraces, and generous proportions to create a distinctive sense of place within a new part of Dubai. The architecture is calm and restrained, with its character coming from light, shadow, materiality, and the relationship between the buildings and the spaces they create.” - Alejandra de Cordoba Estepa, Principal EMEA, HBA Architecture

Through an integrated design approach between HBA Architecture, @coopershill.design - HBA’s dedicated landscape specialist, and HBA Singapore for the interiors, the ongoing Arancia Yards by BEYOND brings the spirit of Mediterranean living to a contemporary residential community in Dubai, with its curated masterplan placing wellbeing at the heart of everyday life, dedicating over 70% to landscaped open space.

Based at @hirschbednerassociates global headquarters in Singapore, Sabine Beck, Partner, has played a pivotal role in HBA’s growth. Over the years, she has earned a reputation for designing memorable hotels and resorts, spanning high-end to lifestyle-led hospitality spaces.

Originally from Germany, Sabine has called Southeast Asia home for the past 20 years. Her European perspective and German roots inform an approach that pairs technical expertise with a keen eye for detail. Sabine enjoys bringing different voices and perspectives together, finding creative ways to balance each project’s many needs. Her work spans China, Southeast Asia and the Middle East, and includes award-winning boutique hotels, luxury resorts and high-end residences. Along the way, she has built close partnerships with international hotel operators and owners.

For Sabine, the pleasure lies in being part of the process from beginning to end: exploring early ideas with her team, shaping the spaces and seeing them come to life through exceptional delivery.

Each project also offers a chance to connect with its surroundings. Sabine looks to the local history, landscape, culture and craftsmanship for inspiration, merging these influences together through a contemporary lens. The result is spaces that feel distinctive and deeply rooted in their locale.

Sabine’s most notable projects include:

@hotelindigo Ningbo, China
@airindia The Maharaja Lounge at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi, India
@renhotels Korla Hotel, China
@hotelindigo Suzhou Grand Canal, China

“For @hotelindigo Ningbo, we paid homage to the city’s extraordinary legacy - its status as the birthplace of modern Chinese banking, and to the entrepreneurial spirit of the Yong merchants. Rather than recreating history, we reinterpreted it through contemporary design, weaving local culture, craftsmanship, and moments of discovery into every space. The result is a hotel that is unmistakably connected to Ningbo.” - Sabine Beck, Partner, HBA Singapore

Stepping inside, a dramatic lobby is anchored by a giant vintage vault door, inspired by the silver shop storage of yesteryear, while suspended metal lines recall the curtains of traditional money shops. Abacuses, scales, Chinese silver dollars, and old accounting ledgers appear throughout - subtly woven into every corner of the hotel, from guest rooms to restaurants, from the bar to meeting spaces.

Signal Hill: A place above the harbour that once warned the city when a storm was coming. A tower, a garden, plants and butterflies, and a view that has outlasted every fashion the waterfront has worn.

The story of @kimptontsimshatsui began there.

Not with a lobby, but with a question; What if arrival felt less like a procedure and more like stepping into the evening? Modern travellers value atmosphere over formality, so the grand double-height volume became a lounge bar rather than a reception desk. Check-in is set discreetly aside, beside an intimate lounge — private enough to arrive on one’s own terms, open enough that the prime view remains with those who stay and savour.

The guestrooms follow the same logic. A freestanding bathtub, or a marble-clad plunge pool, sits beside a sun lounger and looks out over Victoria Harbour. Partitions are reduced to a minimum. Bedroom and bathroom cease to be separate rooms and become one continuous volume, animated by daylight and the panorama.

The materials carry older memories. Rattan-covered furniture, a hallmark of 1950s local craftsmanship. Terrazzo flooring drawn from the city’s historic tong lau. Forest green, recalling the ferries and trams. Nothing quoted too loudly — a palette that knows where it is, and nods, quietly, to Hong Kong’s colonial-era material culture.

We read “Culture of Time” as something timeless: design that remains relevant and elegant, however much time passes. The tower’s history, its materials, its dimensions; the signal station; the garden. All of it folded into the interior, so that what one feels is not a theme, but a place that has been paying attention for a very long time.

Reimagining a former department store in Taichung’s historic Central District, OKU Hotel Taichung gives a familiar landmark a new life as The Department of Travellers’ Tales. The design brings the building’s past into the present through Art Deco influences, vintage references, art and collected objects inspired by the imagined journeys of Mr. OKU. Across the hotel, each space becomes part of a wider narrative shaped by travel, memory, and discovery.

Positioned as a gateway to Taichung, OKU connects guests with the city through its streets, culture, food, art and nightlife. By day, the surrounding neighbourhood invites exploration; by night, Ailìse Bar carries the journey forward through cocktails, conversation and atmosphere, anchored by Taiwan’s tallest indoor liquor tower rising through the space.

Rooted in memory yet shaped for the present, OKU Hotel Taichung offers a stay defined by discovery, connection and a renewed sense of place.

Set within OKU Hotel Taichung, Ailìse Bar extends the hotel’s idea of the Department of Travellers’ Tales into the night. Inspired by journeys, collected memories and the cinematic character of Art Deco, the bar occupies the hotel’s three-storey foyer as an animated social heart. At its centre, Taiwan’s tallest indoor spirit tower rises through the atrium, displaying gins from around the world as objects gathered along a traveller’s path.

Across the space, light, material and atmosphere shift from the energy of the main bar to the intimacy of the private lounges. Reflective surfaces, geometric detailing and warm amber tones give way to richer textures, deeper colours and softer lighting, creating a layered experience that moves between spectacle and retreat.
