Introducing hispid

hispid is a Manchester-based new music flexi-ensemble which specialises in open-score contemporary music, with the artistic ethos of interdisciplinary collaboration with composers, performers, and creatives from all walks of life. Founded in 2023, hispid is currently run by Kámea Németh, Ed Chua, and Rosemary Shapes Tickle. Each hispid concert showcases a unique blend of sounds, the product of an ever-evolving lineup of personnel and instrumentation. Additionally, hispid regularly collaborates with living composers who experiment with unorthodox ways of music-making, such as using electronics, toy instruments, occasional instruments, etc.

hispid is w i d e, hispid is fluid, hispid is whatever you want it to be. hispid is defined in ye olde dictionary as “rough or covered with bristles, stiff hairs, or spines”.

Five-Minute Friends Forever - Rob Hughes

programme note: Have you ever been blackout drunk in a nightclub, teleported to the smoking area, started chatting to
a stranger who asked you for a lighter, ended up having one of the deepest conversations you’ve ever
had, and then you blink, and they’ve disappeared, and you didn’t even catch their name? Same here,
and that’s what this piece is about. Five-Minute Friends Forever is inspired by everyone’s individual
stories on a night out, and the brief moments where one person’s overlaps with another – all to the
soundtrack of a four-on-the-floor beat.

Crossfade - Kuba Williams

programme note: This piece was inspired by the idea of a crossfade, where a DJ will blend two tracks into each other by fading one out, and the other in, creating a gradual transition. The piece takes this brief transitional moment and extends it, presenting small cells of material which are gradually blended into one another around the ensemble, and eventually also with electronics.

jazz on a summer's day - Ro Shapes Tickle

programme note:

You remember how they talked about it at lunch - sticky tables, red blazers, statue of the virgin - asking you: did you see it? No, they made a different one. You can see even *𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲*. I bet you haven't seen it.

"Call on me, call on me..."

A line of dancers perform one gentle movement together, slowly. Slowly. Slowly.

And now, you watch it again. Remember yourself watching, looking away - needing to be *𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗻* to be looking away - looking back, finding less than you'd hoped. Remember how you watched them smile, watched them look back to something else; remember them putting something together for you, to say: look. This colour, this heat. This is what it was; this is what it was like to us. Was it? Which 'us'? What happens to an echo?

A row of poised arms reach out over two decades. Four. A breeze block buffed smooth by the tide. Slowly.

"I'm the same boy I used to be."

The shutters are down and the mirrors are smeared. Nobody is there. You call. A shock of white flowers growing from a corpse.

The ringing stops and you hear breath on the line.

Beech Table - Ed Chua

programme note:

This piece was written to all who have eaten with family.

I hope that with the open, almost script-like score, “Beech Table” can invite musicians to engage with theatre, stagecraft, and exploring unusual prompts for designing sound. This was quite a personal work.

Convergence 1 - Rob Hughes

programme note:

A group of performers will usually have an idea of how a piece will go before they get on stage to perform it, through rehearsals and listening to recordings. This piece is a bit different.

Designed not to be rehearsed at all, the players are not even allowed to look at what anyone else has on their part. They are only given a set of musical fragments, and some instructions. The rest is an experiment in listening, and musical communication.

Sonatinella - Ro Shapes Tickle

programme note:

This piece is inspired by an audience member at a concert I attended who, at the climactic moment of Barber's 'Agnus Dei', burst into ecstatic, untimely applause. It's inspired by that little pause to show the audience that a piece has ended, and by the way that applause peters out as though planned in advance: the sounds and silences around music; the shared moments of wordless understanding or misunderstanding.

"Applauding between movements" chat is overdone, so here's a take on applauding 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯 movements. Join in if you recognise it!
