Come and see my new piece 'lāc' at @musicmalling on 25th September! If you want to. Link in my bio probably

Huge thank you to @marianconsort for commissioning this work, and to the Marian and @domainemusic for performing it. I'm hugely proud of parts of this, and I'm so excited to see what the performers make of it.

---

'lāc' (gift, grace, favour, message, medicine, battle, struggle, offering or sacrifice) is a partial setting of the Old English elegy 'Wulf and Eadwacer'. Readers and scholars frequently remark on how difficult 'Wulf and Eadwacer' is to interpret, but I am always struck most keenly by the text’s emotional immediacy and its distinctive poetic voice.

In parallel with the text, I aimed to contrast periods of poetic starkness and restraint with moments of release where hope and grief seem indistinguishable. I considered the acoustics of Malling Abbey, intending to explore subtle shifts in sound within the space: a single note, for example, passed between players and singers, or between different techniques or strings on an instrument. I hoped to contrast these subtler textures with short periods of release, employing lyrical melodic material that occasionally blossoms into direct, sentimental and perhaps camp snatches of harmony.

I frequently return to 'Wulf and Eadwacer' in moments of alienation and disaffection. I drafted much of the opening to 'lāc' in early 2024 during a period of personal loss, and returning to the arrangement more recently has been a strange and bittersweet process ("wæs mē wyn tō þon, wæs mē hwæþre ēac lāð"). Rather than reflecting any one experience of loss, however, I hope 'lāc' opens up a window between apartnesses, for us to look through – a song, together, that was never joined. Take what speaks to you, now, and leave the rest, for now, as I did. by @roshapestickle

If more than one person imagines something, does that make it more real than if just one does?

Watch the premiere of my recent video/music piece, 'After his wife died, he sold all his possessions and left home on a pilgrimage to visit the nine glass things' from Aldeburgh Festival back in June! Link to my YouTube channel in my bio (or link to the video in my stories, while supplies last).

I had a blast recording a bunch of friends and loved ones to make this video. Initially I hoped to make something lighthearted that celebrated the little things that draw me closer to the people I care about, but sometimes the work wants to be something else, and this one had some things to say about the anger and the togetherness of grief, via a shared appreciation for Velma from Scooby Doo.

I'm working on a longer version that hopefully has other things to say, via more interviews and with more fun on-stage shenanigans, but it'll be in the oven a while yet.

A FULL & FRANK ACCOUNT OF MY RECENT ACTIVITIES & WHEREABOUTS

Low dutch angle interior shot of a woman stood on a landing at the top of a grand staircase.

Earlier this year I was asked to do a solo set at a friend's festival, so I decided to try something new. Here's half an hour of sax/no-input mixing/live&fixed electronics/spoken word about a lady who loses her rabbit and decides she wants to rip her house apart with her bare hands. It's a metaphor.

A partial account of my whereabouts over the past three months, featuring:

1. a solo set at @curiomusicfestival,
2. performing with @massivenun at Curio,
3. performing with @hispid.music at Curio (triple threat),
4-9. spending time with partners, friends and others at Curio,
10-11. disco rehearsals with the Nun,
12. my last outing (at least for the time being) with @concrete_swan_dive,
13. a very important photoshoot with @kamea.nemeth and @ed_chua_.

Not pictured:

- I moved house! I'm in Chorlton now.
- Fond farewells-for-now to the inimitable @kira.schlosser,
- I've spent far too much time playing Clair Obscur,
- redrafting parts,
- mixing tracks,
- the process of applying for a PhD,
- coffee with friends and loved ones, lie-ins, the dusting off of oneself, cooking mapo tofu, watching anime,
- a bunch of other things.

Predictions for the coming months:

- rest,
- more sounds,
- more questionable situations,
- they invent a new kind of soup that works underwater

🎬 PREMIERE: Rosemary Shapes Tickle - Heart as I | The Marian Consort

New work by Rosemary Shapes Tickle [ @roshapestickle ] is a setting of two of Sappho’s fragments, translated by Dr Alexandra Hardwick. Rather than a single linear narrative, Rosemary Shapes Tickle encourages performers “to move freely through short musical cells, forming a cloud of words and phonemes that converge and disperse across the piece’s length.”

Developed through our Emerging Voices programme, this new work embraces fragmentation and openness, drawing inspiration from granular synthesis and the layered voices surrounding Sappho’s surviving texts.
