I'm a needle lace gorrrll.
I have entered my first sewing competition. It's about as low stakes as it can be, but my Crucible has been amazing encouragement and I've learned so many skills.
Seen here are two of them- fingerloop braiding and needlelace. Both are old skills, shown on extant garments and illustrated in manuscripts.
The part I've been enjoying most is thinking about how accessible these small additions can be. A young woman could steal away fifteen minutes, an hour on her day off, and add a ribbon or frill to her gown. The special pretty things that make your clothes your own, that make humans so cute.

Crown Tournament! Helped with livestreaming, swanned around feeling cute, made some cute things for my partner. V nice. I love spring.

I have been knitting for one year!

In one year, knitting has made noticible impacts on my life. On the most basic level, my heart resting rate went down almost immediately, and its stayed down despite the world.

I have friends in every age group now. I learn Shetland from women who are old as trees and grew where the lace did. I learn new bind offs from bored teenagers who thought "this can be easier."

I've knitted in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Nova Scotia; on ferries in lakes and oceans, on planes, in the mountains, prairies, badlands, Canadian Shield, watching the lowest tide and highest tide in Canada.

I suspect I will keep knitting and reflecting. All I really want to do in life is fiddle with bits of string.

The bookes I am reading, arranged on a crocheted rug.

First is Mistress', Maids and Men, Baronial Life in the Thirteenth Century. By Margaret Wade Labarge, who has somehow made a meticulous recounting of Baronial receipt books full of wit and life. Its a difficult period to find non-martial histories for.

The second is Bethlehem, A Celebration of Pal3stinian Food, by Fadi Kattan. The opening line is

"Bethlehem: a city famous the world over, yet so often seen only through the eyes of the pilgrims passing through."

I have to take some responsibility for my own citations and looks into history, which centred the eyes of Christian pilgrims like Margery Kempe or Jewish historians who studied Bethlehem as a religious symbol not a living city.

I have found it impossible to pose photos and flaunt finished objects as we watch, livestreamed, the attempted destruction of a people. My "promised land" will never be taken, will never be a curse to another person or animal.

While walking home from a routine doctors appointment, a blessing that also throws a stark painful contrast to the treatment that others in Pa le sti n e are suffering through, I stumbled upon and joined an high school student protest. Did you know you're allowed to do this? Find a marshal or someone who has a megaphone and offer to join them. Just be on your best behaviour and only follow what feels right to you.
