While “pajama” denotes sleepwear in modern parlance, during the 1920s and 1930s the term introduced a new kind of resort attire for women – trousers. “Beach pajamas” brought pants for women into some level of mainstream acceptance, long before the sexual revolution, and left a remarkable and lasting impact on women’s fashion.

Beach pajamas featured in Vogue in January of 1932. The magazine recommended mixing the sweater with other pieces in one’s closet as well, as it is the “sports sweater par excellence.”
They provided instructions to knit one yourself, which I’ve included here for any ambitious and talented souls 🐰
