A glimpse into Aspen’s past ⛏️ Long before Aspen became the ski town we know today, silver mining brought prospectors, pioneers, and big dreams to the Rockies.

Today, the ghost towns of Ashcroft and Independence offer a window into that history, with weathered cabins, historic structures, and stories of a bygone era still tucked into the mountains surrounding Aspen.

Take a trip back in time this October and discover Aspen’s ghost towns at the link in bio!

S. Galena Street, fall 1963. On the left side of the street, Guido's Swiss Inn is partially visible, as well as the Tomkin's Hardware building, and the Aspen Block. On the right side is the Independence building (with a sign for the Prince Albert on the side), the Sinclair gas station, the Andre's Building, and the Elk's building. A related image of the Independence building is in the Aspen Times on October 4, 1963 (page 11), with a caption reading "Sparkling with a new exterior paint job, the former Prince Albert building will begin a new life soon. Built in 1890 and originally called the Independence building, the structure will take back its former name. In addition to a flower shop, a cobbler's shop and storage area for a tobacco distributing company which now occupy the ground floor, a large drug store is scheduled to take up most of the space on the street floor. The upper two stories will become a rooming house and there's a possibility that the basement will be turned into a bar-restaurant in the old-time tradition."
