Alums give back to river class that sent them on new and fulfilling paths
***
In the summer of her senior year at Virginia Commonwealth University, history major Maya Walters took a class that would change her life.
***
The class was Footprints on the James, a multiweek immersive course through @vcuchs with the RecWell Outdoor Adventure Program. Students explored the James River watershed, traveling by raft, kayak and bateau; camping overnight; hiking; and learning about the human and natural histories of the river and how they intersect.
***
Walters went on to work in school settings, then outdoor adventure programs and finally a nature-focused daycare.
“My career has turned into getting kids outside,” she said.

In his visit to the VCU campus, Adam Jortner will talk about the main points he writes about in his book, "A Promised Land: Jewish Patriots, the American Revolution, and the Birth of Religious Freedom."
***
His talk will explore the central role of Judaism in the making of the United States and its definition of citizenship, widening the scope of the American Revolution and those who fought in it, including Jewish patriots. We are back with our first student highlight of the semester! ✨📚

Meet Blakely Wright, a history major with a minor in anthropology. Blakely's decision to study the past stems from her own family history. As the granddaughter of history majors and teachers, she loved exploring her grandparents' home, filled with books, artifacts, and much more.

By combining her history major with an anthropology minor she is able to focus on historical events alongside the people and cultures who influenced those events.
