This is Ron’s daughter Shelby, posting from his account to spread the word.

He was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 Melanoma which has spread to his brain and kidneys. This is a tough time for him, his family, and his friends but he has a strong spirit and is fighting hard to get better! Any support is so greatly appreciated from all of us ❤️❤️

Today was sort of a “day off” on the Berkeley graduation trip. Got in so many things I love. Started with pickleball of course, then a mix of nature and history: San Quentin’s lovely secluded beaches and it’s prison; Muir Beach overlook’s amazing coastal views and it’s WWII pillbox artillery bunkers to protect the west coast. And of course mixed in good times and good food with a handful of longtime friends from the SDSU days.

Fun day today. Shelby is blessed to have made a village of really good friends while in Berkeley. I have no doubt I’ll hear many of these names for the rest of her life. Took some of them out for a day on the bay today in Sausalito. Justin was able to join us as well. taken in Richardson Bay Marina by @historyverde

Got the Colombians to their flight back home Saturday morning. New host and old host combined - a delicious dinner at Walt’s Wharf Friday. Enjoyed some quality time with mom in Glendora this morning. Happy Mother’s day! by @historyverde

COLOMBIA cultural observations from my spring break trip: FOOD & DRINK:

Very little processed food here. A sit down fresh meal with 2-3 beers or cocktails averaged about $16 US, even in the most crowded tourist areas.

I had many cazuelas de mariscos - seafood bowls. Sounds odd, but the one “con queso” in Barranquilla was fantastic.

In almost every place on the coast there are people with coolers selling beers on the sidewalk for about $1.50. Aguila (Eagle), Club Colombia are the most popular.

The “filet mignon” was more like medallions in gravy with mushrooms. On the last night I passed on the $75 tomahawk steak. The $13 pepper steak was essentially a filet mignon rubbed in cracked peppercorns. Thick, juicy, tender delicious steak.

Arepas are super popular here. On the 5 hr bus ride from Santa Marta back to Cartagena, they stop to let a vendor on with a bucket of hot off the grill chicken arepas for $1.25. When he’s done selling they pull over to let him off, and he hitches a ride on a motorcycle back to his wife’s cooking shack.

Coca Cola is super popular here, but their version doesn’t have as much sugar as in the US and the bottles are a bit smaller.

Colombian food is not as spicy as most
Mexican food. They don’t use many chili peppers. Also no roasted hot sauces. The only one most places have, Ajibasco, is very similar to Tabasco sauce. by @historyverde

City #2 of my Colombia trip: Barranquilla. Although most in my circle have never heard of it, it is over twice the size of Cartagena. It’s the home of Shakira and Sofia Vergara also has a statue. Got to hang out with Manuel Felipe and meet Alejandra and their dog Zeus; and got some private tours including his office and watchtower on the port. Hotel Dann Carlton is luxurious. Great places to eat and drink. Museums were closed for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. On to Santa Marta; stay tuned. taken in Barranquilla by @historyverde

Fun final day in town before my spring break vacation yesterday. I definitely wasn’t the only person who arrived via bicycle. Beautiful day for the beach and live music. Lunch with mom today, then a late night flight. taken in Sea Legs at the Beach by @historyverde
