Wallace Farmhouse

Visited the Wallace Farm at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park with the team hired to document the house and site in order to write the historic structures report. The house was originally a "dog trot" meaning the center of the house was open such that a "dog could trot from front to back". The farm stood during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain where the Confederates held the high ground. Ultimately though, they won the battle, not the war, as Sherman was still able to flank them leaving Atlanta vulnerable. #histpresinc #nationalparkweek ~

Happy birthday to the National Park Service. I've gone on and on about my work at Mill Springs Battlefield National Monument but for National Park Week I'll share some images from other parks I had the pleasure of working with: Camp Nelson National Monument, Medgar and Myrle Evers House National Monument, Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park and Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. From the American Civil War until the Vietnam War, Decoration Day was celebrated on May 30. It was renamed Memorial Day in 1971 in the midst of that same offensive.

To end our time in Cincinnati (until fall 😉), here is their Decoration Day statue to the memory of the Camp Washington men who fought in the "War to end all wars". #histpresinc #decorationday ~

For Memorial Day 2026, we visit Veterans Plaza in Overton Park in Memphis. The plaza was carved out of Overton Park in 1989. Two of the memorial pieces pre-date the plaza. It doesn't go into detail, but when in the South, and they mention memorials with names from 1970 or earlier, you have to ask yourself if that included Black citizens at the time, and if not, did they go back and add them or are they still to this day just memorials to White southern men who died in service to this country? 🤔 #histpresinc #memorialday 📷: 4 ~

Early evening, April 4, 1968, a shot rang out in the Memphis sky. Martin Luther King, Jr. had been assassinated. Dr. King had been in Memphis to help with sanitation workers strike over unsafe conditions. The night before he gave his "Mountaintop" speech at an event that my uncle ushered. The next day, at around 6 pm, an assassin's bullet struck Dr. King while he was standing on the balcony about to go to dinner. My uncle was at work on the loading dock at Memphis Central Station (halfway point on the City of New Orleans) a block away when he heard the shot. A few minutes later a police car came by and the policeman yelled out, "We got y'all's leader". Dr. King was dead. #histpresinc #americanhistory ~

Did you follow along on the Friends of Music Hall tour of the Cincinnati Music Hall? Built in 1878, it was recently restored in 2017. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1975. #histpresinc ~

It was #piday over the weekend. Because pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to the diameter of said circle, pi day is all about admiring the beauty of circles, like the 40-foot diameter steel water wheel of the Mill at Mill Springs. The thirteen springs used to power the mill are what gave the area its name.

The first mill may have been built on the site along the Cumberland River by 1807. The current grist mill was built in 1877 on the 20-foot stone foundation of a previous mill. At one point there was also a saw mill and a carding factory at the site. These were factors in why C. S. A. Brigadeir-General Felix Zollicoffer chose Mill Springs for the winter camp of his troops. Any reminders of those additional mills, however, are now below the waters of Lake Cumberland. The 40-foot wheel was added in the early 20th century. The Mill Springs Mill was placed on the National Register in 1973. #histpresinc ~

#OTD On 22 Feb. 1960, 34 Virginia Union University students, 11 women and 23 men, refused to leave the segregated dining facilities here at Thalhimers department store and were arrested. Charged with trespassing, they were later convicted and fined.

This sit-in was part of a wave of protests across the South inspired by recent sit-ins in Greensboro, North Carolina. The arrests of the Richmond 34 sparked the Campaign for Human Dignity which organized boycotts and picketed Richmond businesses. Thalhimers and other retailers subsequently desegregated. In June 1963, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the convictions of the Richmond 34 in the case, Randolph v. Virginia.

For #presidentsday, let's take a trip 45 miles due east of Richmond, Virginia. Rising out of a commercial lot near Williamsburg, VA are forty-three ginormous presidential heads, and one tiny one, the remnants of Presidents Park Museum, a roadside history park to complement Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown.

The statues are all made of reinforced concrete, weigh about 7,500 pounds each, and stand 16-18 feet tall. When the park closed, the owner of this lot took on the task of moving everything to his property "until something better could be done". So far, that "something better" only consists of occasional ticketed access for gawkers to wander around the site in awe. #insearchofquirk 1/2 📸: 10 ~
