This collection of letters by Rilke will guide you deep into your own self, your memories, your sadness and your solitude. I found it months and months ago at a used book sale and am determined it is essential reading for any artist. The world is harsh for sensitive souls, but let yourself be vulnerable to the harshness and harbor no guilt for it. Feel it, and the words will come.

Hey everyone, I know it’s been a while, a little over a year since our last post, but our passion for literature has not been extinguished. The bookstagrm was a fun way to document and share our love for reading with each other and the bookstragm community, and it is something we have missed. The everyday monotony of life, unfortunately, put a halt in our posts, but hopefully, we’ll be back in full force.
Today I would like to share a book I finished last week, The City and The Pillar by Gore Vidal. The book was a quick read and an excellent close to the peak of summer. The main character’s pursuit of a lost lover had me reflecting upon my own life. When looking back, the title summarizes much of the novel with people being much like cities, constant and constantly changing, while others are pillars, stagnant and still, both having their pros and cons. It is interesting to see how in many ways, the world has changed since the novel’s debut in the 1940s but also its relevancy, so I guess the book, too, is a city and pillar in that manner.
It feels good to be back with all of you, and I am excited to share all the reads to come!

📖 Book review: Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart

“What did I do?” asked Mungo. ‘What did I do?’ It was what he had been trained to say. Never ‘what’s wrong with you?’ or ‘are you okay?’ Only ‘what did I do?’

TW: this book contains scenes of sexual assault and violence.

Young Mungo is the story of a boy growing up in Glasgow who cannot understand why no one seems to love him as much as he loves them. Named for a saint, Mungo wants to be the perfect son for his deadbeat mother, a best friend to his brilliant sister, and man enough for his hotheaded brother, the ringleader of the local Protestant gang. Then Mungo meets James, a Catholic, and he finally begins to know what real love feels like. But in the violent streets of Glasgow, there is no place for love between two boys.

If you’ve read “A Little Life,” you might understand what I mean when I say Mungo is sort of like an adolescent Scottish version of Jude St. Francis, though not as shrouded in mystery; Mungo wears his tender heart on his sleeve. Still, you only want this best things for this innocent character, who can’t catch a break from every terrible thing that could happen to a person. It’s a vivid portrayal of how dangerous queer love can be. The setting and the characters (with all their flaws) feel incredibly real. Douglas Stuart will make you fall in love with Mungo, and for that reason, you should give it a read.

A little reading/life update for y’all:)

I haven’t been quite as active as I’d like lately, but I’m happy to say that last Friday was my college graduation! It’s been a wild ride and as you can imagine I was consistently busy with school and hadn’t had a ton of time for reading. Suddenly it seems now that I have all the time in the world.

To celebrate, my girlfriend and I are spending the week by the ocean — which might be the best place to read a book as pleasantly mundane and thoughtful as The Idiot by Elif Batuman. I finished Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart just a couple of days ago. I would love to share a review with you all once I gather my thoughts as best I can to put a review together. For now, I’m burying my feet in the sand, inhaling the salty ocean air, and nursing a sunburn.
