From food waste to fresh opportunities in Argentina.

In Rosario, a local food recovery programme is giving surplus produce a new purpose while creating employment opportunities for former informal waste pickers.

Since 2018, RecupeBAR has rescued more than 1 million kilograms of fresh produce, redirecting nutritious food from landfills to communities facing food insecurity. The programme now employs 14 former informal waste pickers, including Nico López, whose journey reflects the human impact of this initiative.

Supported by The Global FoodBanking Network, the programme shows how collaboration between local government, businesses and food banks can reduce food waste, avoid emissions and support livelihoods.

This story looks at how locally led solutions are delivering climate action with tangible benefits for people and communities.

Last week during Climate Week NYC, we caught up with experts who are showing how their solutions are delivering the energy transition and driving major investments and growth.

After a year of continued volatility in fossil fuel markets, building a more resilient energy system is increasingly a national security priority.

Clean energy, electrification, and storage are creating new jobs, attracting capital, and strengthening our industrial base. The countries and companies that build fastest will lead.

Water resilience in Yucatán is being shaped by the women who know these challenges firsthand.

Through the Women’s Water House, more than 80 Mayan women have been trained in water stewardship, climate action, finance and cooperative governance, while women-led committees are helping manage local water systems and access to purified water.

A community-led solution with the potential to grow beyond one place.

How quickly can we electrify transport and buildings? And how do we make sure that the electricity going into those parts of the economy is increasingly reliable and affordable? That is the significance of the COP31 Presidency's 35×35 goal: increasing electricity's share of global final energy consumption from roughly 20 percent today to 35 percent by 2035. The countries and companies that can build this new energy system quickly will have an advantage.

This year, Climate Week NYC offered a glimpse of what a more practical phase of climate action can look like: not one breakthrough, but networks of cities, companies, investors and governments making sure individual solutions scale and drive one another.

Electrification was the solution everyone organized around. "35 by 35" was the phrase of the week, and on a Brazilian freight corridor, 50 companies are working to put 1,000 electric trucks on the road by 2030.

Samed Ağırbaş, COP31 Climate High-Level Champion, launched the Istanbul Zero Waste Action Platform to connect those solutions on zero waste and the circular economy that too often work in isolation. It was welcomed by Japan’s Yokohama city, which has cut its waste by about half since 2001 even as its population grew.

COP31 in Antalya will be the next place to see how far the connections across the Action Agenda have traveled.

Transforming how people grow, distribute, and consume food has become a question of global food and economic security.
This is why, ahead of the UN’s climate change conference #COP31, the Action Agenda is bringing together governments, farmers, Indigenous communities, businesses, and financiers to drive forward the solutions that can restore degraded land, scale regenerative agriculture, cut food loss and waste, and build food systems that are resilient to climate shocks.
Done right, this transformation could unlock US$4.5 trillion in new business opportunities every year by 2030.

Cities and regions are already delivering climate action where people feel it most, from cleaner transport and more reliable energy to resilient food, water and urban systems.

The new Subnational Call to Scale Up Action highlights how local and regional governments can build on what is already working, connect with initiatives across the Global Climate Action Agenda, and help accelerate implementation across six thematic areas.

As subnational leaders gather for the Urban 20 Mayors Summit in New York, the call puts a spotlight on the role of cities, territories and communities in turning global climate goals into action on the ground.

"The harbor is one of the greatest opportunities hiding in plain sight."

That's the idea at the heart of Pete Malinowski's conversation with Climate Champions. In the feature, our Co-Founder and CEO shares why restoring one billion oysters was never just about oysters. It's about changing the way New Yorkers see their city, reconnecting people with the Harbor. That this work has always been centered around proving that restoration at an urban scale is possible.

If you've ever wondered why Billion Oyster Project exists, or why this work matters far beyond the water, this is the story to read.

Read Pete's story through Climate Champions at the link in our bio.
