I love the concept of a hidden door, but building and installing these bookcases has tested my skill set way beyond what I expected…and they still aren’t functional 🤦‍♀️.

When my two oldest left on missions (a year apart)I promised them that by the time they were both home this room would be ready for them to move home to. At the time it seemed like more then enough time, but it kept getting bumped down the to do list…and now here we are. The oldest has been home for a year, and my second oldest will be home in six weeks.

I just finished an awesome make over for my daughter. In the telling of that make over I mentioned that we had to kick my son out of the room to make it happen. But for several months we’ve been working on a room for him, that in my opinion is even more epic.

There’s a prequel to this that can’t be shared in a reel.

A few years ago, Ellie went through some incredibly difficult friendships. As a parent, it was heartbreaking to watch. I spent more hours than I can count praying that she’d find her people. Friends that were good kids who would value her and that she could be herself around.

So you can imagine how much it meant to me when I texted her friends that night and they showed up twenty minutes later…and stayed for hours…it made it about so much more than finishing a room.

It was an honestly an answer to a lot of late night prayers.

The room was a gift for Ellie. But watching those kids all walk in after we revealed the room, and watching them love and support Ellie, was a gift for me.

Part 2 - I realize real fast that the trim alone was going to take me a full week. Built ins aren’t going to happen, at least not before she got back. I’d rather have the room look amazing than look like a construction zone. Plus no built ins leaves me time to do more shopping for finishing details.

Ellie’s room makeover is under way! First step up, painting.

I was a little nervous about the color because I honestly didn’t give it a ton of thought. We bought it several weeks ago and at the time I had serious decision fatigue from remodeling the entire basement. Now that it’s done…what are your thoughts? Do you love the color as much as I do? It’s feminine without being overly girly, which is perfect for my daughter.

Drop a red, white and blue hanging basket into a pot and you have instant American spirit. And If you want more you can add additional flowers to the rest of your pots. But, the best part is flowers not only work for July, but can carry through the whole summer.
