This thesis project started last fall and ended with our show up in @vcuartstheanderson
My first show! How exciting!
It was so fun watching everyone interact with my work and including their personal experiences in the cans (though what they wrote was quite sad) by @hmcreationsllc

“You should smile more”
This thesis project is based around the shared feminine experience. Women and femme-identifying people are constantly bombarded with nasty remarks to look a certain way, speak a certain way, and act a certain way. It’s exhausting. “You should smile more” captures how each of us feel about the things that men or even other women with misogynistic and patriarchal ideals feel the need to say to us.
These long exposures show both the initial composure along with the internal reactions based around phrases spewed at us daily. The black trash can on top of the pedestal contains slips of paper that hold phrases that are shared between the participants, and those beyond this project.
Those that related, anonymously added in their own experience by dropping it into the silver trash can during the reception.
Let’s treat each other better.
