#NewNoise: The elusive and ineffable collective that is MOSHTRQ has unleashed a new EP by Paris-based Tunisian music-maker, Hmenou - a connoisseur of drum and bass.

As their second release of 2025, ‘Bab Hwita’ is described as a literal and metaphorical journey into the intersection of drum and bass and cultural memory. It showcases Hmenou’s unique and dynamic sound palette and is a fitting entry into the collective’s all-caps catalogue.

The opener, ‘Studio 22’, establishes the EP’s cross-Mediterranean essence, as its pulsating drum and bass energy meets the poetry of Ramallah rapper, Elos Byuri. The result is a fierce, boundary-crossing anthem, a statement of a shared sense of rhythm and resistance.

Hmenou leans into Tunisia’s cultural subconscious in ‘Zaretna El Barka; which comes as a homage to his homeland’s history. The voice of legendary 1920s singer, Habiba Msika, and of snippets of political speeches and radio broadcasts enrich a haunting ensemble of sounds that find balance between nostalgia and contemporary production.

Closing the EP, ‘TU722’ (named after the Tunis-Paris flight known to be regularly delayed) provides arguably the most powerful imprint of Hmenou’s vision, as he expresses a struggle between the two locations, the two worlds which inform both his world-view and music. It tricks you with a sense of minimalism, but as crushing basslines break through, it turns anthemic, relentless in its seeming catharsis.

The closer also best encapsulates Hmenou’s exploration of identity and belonging, a battle that often questions and inspires in equal amounts. What he proves with ‘Bab Hwita’, however, is that cultural memory, whether shared or individual, isn’t set in stone. It’s undefinable in scope, malleable in expression and, ultimately, available for reinterpretation - particularly when viewed through the lens of a contemporary sound that rejects commercialism in favour of a more critical, DIY philosophy.

Ahmed Muin Abu Amsha teaches music in Gaza.
He’s been showing his students how to take the sound of drones and turn it into just another backdrop they can sing over.

When that video came out, I think it stopped all of us in our tracks. The resilience in it was striking. I still can’t shake it, even though it was posted four or five months ago.

Fourteen producers from across the Arab world ended up connecting with Ahmed. We took the song Sheel sheel ya jamali sheel, a traditional Palestinian piece, and reworked it into thirteen new tracks.
Each artist brought their own world into it—jungle, dubstep, techno, experimental, and more.

All of it became an album called Wings Over Wires, out this Friday on @g__oeuvre .
All profits to Ahmed’s group and his students: Gaza Birds Singing, a collective of teachers fighting to keep music alive for children in Gaza.

This track is called Studio22 - a collab with Palestinian rap artist @elosbyuri
We started this idea years ago when we met in Ramallah 🇵🇸
It took a while, but we finally made it happen.
And now it’s here, while Palestine fights to breathe.
2 days ago, the UN said what most of us already know.
Genocide is not an opinion. Let’s act like it.
Music, stories, voices – they need to cut through.

been messing with this double drop 🇹🇳X🇫🇷.
DVRKBOY’s flow HOLD UP has an energy that just sits perfectly under Visages’ subs. It feels like they were meant to talk to each other.
DVRKBOY’s in Tunisia making sharp incisive rap, Visages are four french geniuses in Toulouse making deep dubstep for Alix Perez’s label 1985.
But here in a kitchen at 2AM, they’re having a full conversation.

Same punchlines, different frequencies.
This is what i mean when i say the North African and UK scenes are cousins that never met.

This Gaza classroom sang to the sound of drones — I couldn’t stop listening.

I flipped Ahmed Muin’s @ahmedmuin_abuamsha performance of « شيل يا جمالي شيل » with his students into a 140 bass track: raw, simple, and full of heart.
Bass music can be political, too.
