Navigating Soft Ground: Traces in Fabric—Print Ephemera and Voices from Venice

This workshop explores the intersection of traditional printmaking and textile practices through soft-ground etching, chine collé, relief printing, and mixed-media processes. Participants are invited to bring personal ephemera—such as garments, lace, letters, photographs, maps, found objects, or other materials that hold personal or cultural significance—to serve as both physical printing elements and conceptual points of departure.

Drawing inspiration from Venice’s rich histories of textiles, craftsmanship, and book arts, participants will investigate how objects carry traces of memory, migration, labor, identity, and place. Using the pressure-sensitive qualities of soft-ground etching, students will capture the textures of fabrics and found materials while experimenting with printing onto fabric and layering delicate papers and textiles through chine collé.

Alongside technical demonstrations, the workshop encourages participants to research and reflect on the histories embedded within the materials they bring. Who used these objects? What stories, traditions, or cultural contexts do they preserve? How do they speak to family histories, migration, labor, privilege, oppression, resilience, or systems of power? Through discussion and making, participants will consider how printmaking can function as a method of tracing personal and collective histories while transforming everyday ephemera into contemporary works of art.

By the conclusion of the workshop, participants will have created a series of experimental prints that combine soft-ground etching, chine collé, printed textiles, and personal ephemera while developing practical strategies for integrating material research, storytelling, and layered surfaces into their own artistic practice. taken in Venice, Italy by @hmuirl

As the residency at Scuola Internazionale di Grafica moves into its final week. Anna Miller, Veta Gorner, and Marc Cote are preparing to bring a month of research, experimentation, and printmaking together in a three-person exhibition.

Throughout September, the artists have been working alongside one another in Venice, each approaching printmaking through a distinct relationship to material, process, and place. Their upcoming exhibition brings those individual practices into conversation, offering a glimpse into the work and ideas that have developed throughout their time at the Scuola.

Bringing together artists from Iowa, London, and Massachusetts, the exhibition reflects three distinct approaches to contemporary printmaking.

Veta Gorner is a UK-based multidisciplinary artist and Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers whose practice spans printmaking, graphic arts, and artist books. Her work is informed by a background in architecture, design, and publishing.

Marc Cote is an American artist and educator whose practice explores monotype and experimental printmaking. He is Chair of the Department of Art, Design, and Art History at Framingham State University and serves on the Board of The Boston Printmakers.

Anna Miller is an Iowa-based artist whose work explores print, material, memory, and place. In Venice, she has been drawing from the city’s textiles, printed ephemera, material surfaces, and visual environment as she develops new work during the residency. by @hmuirl

Throughout the month, Anna will have dedicated time to continue developing her printmaking practice while exploring print, material, memory, and place within Venice’s histories of printmaking, textiles, craftsmanship, and book arts.

We’re grateful to Southern Graphics Council International (SGCI) for helping make this opportunity possible.

As part of the residency, Anna will also lead a public workshop:

Illuminating the Darkness: A Time of Malfeasance featuring a collection of Virginia A Myers dry point etchings and foil work of Anna Miller hosted at Articfactory Iowa City, Iowa. Closing reception July 11th 6-8pm.

Myers used printmaking as both a technical pursuit and a form of cultural commentary.

In A Time of Malfeasance, the title alone signals a moment when systems of power falter and ethical boundaries collapse. Through layered mark-making and complex surfaces, Myers evokes the tension and instability that define such periods.

Rather than offering clear narratives, Myers invites viewers to sit within the ambiguity of these moments. The works included in this exhibition reflect an artist attentive to the social climate around her and committed to the expressive potential of print.

Together, these prints remind us that printmaking has long been a medium of witness. In Myers’ hands, the etched line becomes both record and response, capturing the uneasy atmosphere of a time marked by conflict, responsibility, and reflection.
