Founder Christine Lara Hoff retraced her steps in New York City last week, visiting 111 West 57th Street — the slenderest of the new luxury towers lining Central Park to the south, a project she worked on while at @shoparchitects. While such developments remain highly contentious, this one integrates itself into the urban fabric: stepping back from the street, framing it with a five-story base that picks up on existing datums, and preserving the landmarked Steinway Building in the round. Even the smallest details — down to the entry door — grow out of New York’s art deco era, reinterpreted into new heights. This dialogue between past and present, each given room to breathe, has shaped HOFF Architects from our very first project onward.

A wall that works with the climate.
At the core of THE PAVILION lies the Trombe Wall — a low-tech thermal mass system that turns architecture into climate performance. Rather than correcting the existing house, the Pavilion refines it: a brick wall behind curtain glazing doubles as structure and thermal storage, passively heating in winter through solar gain and a natural chimney effect, and cooling in summer as louvers vent rising heat and draw in cool night air. The result is a wall that breathes with the seasons, requiring only the occasional assist of a low-energy fan. Heat gain turned into a climatic asset — almost entirely passive, entirely intentional.

NO MAN’S LAND

Our first completed project is about to be joined by a sibling. Stay tuned for SCHUPPEN — an old tool shed reimagined as a sauna and spa space. Building upon details, spatial ideas, and material strategies developed in NO MAN’S LAND, SCHUPPEN extends the architectural language of its predecessor while responding to the particular character of the existing structure. Together, the two interventions complete a small architectural ensemble on this serene site — seemingly in the middle of nowhere, where time appears to stand still.

OFFICE KITCHENETTE

This kitchenette serves as a backdrop to the office meeting room, a bar to gather, and smart storage for a busy kitchen. The countertop — a beautiful white, stone-like composite — extends the windowsill, drawing daylight deeper into the room and reducing the need for artificial light. Below, Yakisugi wood fronts give the wood a naturally water-resistant, charred finish, perfect for daily use. Many thanks to our cabinetry maker, Herrmann Koch, who crafted the Yakisugi wood himself for this project.

CUSTOM BUILT-IN CABINETRY

As architects, we not only design, plan, and work closely with our network of tradespeople to realise new builds and renovations — we also design custom furniture that responds to our clients’ needs while extending the architectural concept into the interior, shaping a Gesamtkunstwerk.

The Cut Out is a floor-to-ceiling built-in cabinet with white lacquered fronts, conceived as a thickened wall that provides maximum storage while preserving a clean, continuous spatial language. A cut-out in oiled solid oak creates a tactile and visual display case centred on a framed view in the project. The eye-catching piece of furniture becomes a void within the solid, rather than a solid object occupying a void.

HOFF Architects

Our office reflects our design process: grounded in digital technologies and material logics, we work across multiple scales and through multiple mediums to iteratively and collaboratively arrive at the best solution. Pin-ups and charrettes accumulate new energy and information on our shelves and walls — a living archive of ideas, shared and worked through in real time.

THE PAVILION

Set back and joined to the existing house by a glass lightwell seam, the Pavilion reads as an independent modern volume. An intentional juxtaposition from the existing structure, this pristine brick box begins to dissolve towards the garden. Towards the street, the taut opaque brick façade shields for privacy and draws daylight in through a rooftop window. The differentiated hues of each brick were carefully composed to break up this wall with undulating gradients. Along the garden edge, this solid brick box gradually dissolves, opening up to the private garden — first with a single window, then as a continuous curtain wall that wraps the perimeter while the structural brick wall slips behind it.

LEAVING THE CITY BEHIND

We are honored to be featured in „Leaving the City Behind: Country House Architecture & Design“. Among esteemed colleagues, we have been chosen as architects who are reimagining rural living for the 21st century, creating a symbiosis of comfort, environmental awareness, and aesthetic restraint.

THE PAVILION

A curtain for our curtain wall. In THE PAVILION the boundary between inside and outside is not fixed but negotiated — a threshold that can open to dissolve enclosure, or draw closed to safeguard intimacy.

The façade operates as a double surface: glass for permanence, fabric for adaptability. Together they let the space be reshaped by mode, by use, by hour — an architecture tuned to time rather than fixed by it.

Beyond the poetic register, the curtain performs technically too: filtering solar heat and glare, and absorbing the acoustic reflection that glass alone would return.

HOFF Architects

We moved into our current office exactly 3 years ago. We developed the ground floor into a beautiful work space and filled it with inspiring collaborations within our team, with our clients and our consultants. A special thanks to all those who have shaped our great experience here.

FACHWERK RENOVATION

We are exited to be restoring what was never meant to be replaced. The wattle and daub ceiling is one of the most quietly intelligent building traditions in Central European architecture — regulating acoustics, temperature, and climate through nothing more than straw, clay, and craft. With only one producer remaining in Germany, each wrap is hand-made and irreplaceable. We are honoured to be working with this material.
