We don’t know what kind of life you had before that night when you went to my parents’ door covered in blood. Someone had thrown hot water at you, and somehow, through that blinding pain, you knew that Mama and Papa would rush you to the vet and ask them to open their clinic past closing hours. Mama never wanted a cat, or any pet for that matter, because she was afraid of the kind of grief that comes with such an attachment. But when you chose her that night, there was no question – when love arrives, you must let it and accept it.

We didn’t know how old you were or how much time we had with you. But you settled into our white house like your name was on the lease. You had your favorite spots: the chair in front of the pond, the pillow in the living room, on top of the dining table while we were eating, and Mama‘s grey lazy boy.

Despite your nature, you never broke any of the ceramics displayed on Mama’s shelves. You listened to Papa and his one-sided conversations with you in the kitchen while he cooked – it’s a miracle you got a word out of him, there are days when Mom and I struggle to. Somehow, you matched Mama’s temper and Papa’s temperament.

When I left for Manila last June, I didn’t know it would be the last time I’d see you. That morning before my flight, you rubbed your head against my feet like you always did. But maybe you knew? Your time with us was running out and I wouldn’t make it home in time to see you one last time.

And if you did know, then maybe you also knew that after living most of your life on the streets, you had a home and a family. You must have known that we loved you.

When I come home to Samar this December, you won’t be there waiting for me, and that bit breaks my heart the most. Papa said, “It’s different now that he’s not around.”

Mama and Papa buried you with their own hands in our garden, wrapped in a white cloth Mama bought in the Vatican. You were born on the cold, hard streets and now rest in the warm soil of our home. Forever a part of it, forever belonging to it.

Sparkle is as old as my grief-stricken heart.

We got her the year my brother died. During one of the lowest and darkest points of my life, this golden Yorkie bounded into our lives—sparks flying at her wake—bringing light and warmth into our period of mourning.

She was such a ball of sunshine when she was a puppy, and as she got older, she softened into a gentle, sweet, and lambing dog. I would always credit myself for her temperament, “She’s just like her mama!” But I knew from the day I brought her home that she was heaven-sent.

It was all in her eyes, never absentminded or aloof like most dogs. They always locked on mine every time I reached down to pet her. They bore into me as if she knew all the hardened and heavy secrets I carried in my heart, and in that connection, I felt comforted.

She saw our family through all the seasons of our grief and the life we built around it–and after 11 years of being my sweet angel baby, she has now crossed the rainbow bridge and returned home.

The loss has been tearing me up inside. I wasn’t with her when she passed—I was, and still am, hundreds of kilometers away, back home in Samar. It physically pains me that I couldn’t be there in her final moments, to hold her close and let her feel how deeply she was loved as she left this world. The guilt has been severe on my grieving heart.

I’m grateful for my friends, @poli.sux and @fifislagirl, who answered my distress call and took care of Sparkle’s aquamation. They took Sparkle from our Manila home late at night and brought her to Pet to Nature for a humble wake. In the photos, she looks like she’s asleep on a patch of grass, just as she would be if she were still alive.

Poli and Fifi called me on FaceTime and I got to say my goodbyes, my thank yous, my sorrys, and my I love yous. But it killed me that I didn’t get to hold her or kiss the top of her head one last time.

In the midst of this heartbreak, only one thought brings me peace—Sparkle will finally meet the boy she helped us grieve.
