Don’t miss this exciting exhibition of works by Steve Oliver and Jonathan Whitter 📺   “The amount of information we are likely to encounter in our lives is increasing exponentially. The visual data we are subject to daily comes from a mix of conscious engagement with specific sources, algorithmic suggestions and subconscious absorption from our surroundings.”   Follow the link in our bio for full exhibition info ⚡️   Admission to the gallery is free.   The exhibition is curated by Holden Gallery’s curatorial assistant @juliamakojnik 🙌   @steve_oliver_studio @jpwhitter 👏 by @holdengallery

The Holden Gallery presents SIGNALS, an exhibition of work by Steve Oliver and Jonathan Whitter. Steve Oliver builds his photographic works in-computer; he uses images found in extensive online database searches, where he attempts to balance the optical and incidental against algorithmic predictions. Jonathan Whitter’s augmented reality sculptures are a result of feeding coded data through an enfolded digital space, a point within a mathematical object that sits outside the binary code, where measurement is unquantifiable. The works shown as part of SIGNALS actively withhold information. They encourage a slower, more focused interaction with visual information and the strategies we employ to filter it. We can notice our instinct to extract a signal and form meaning to better fabricate our position in the world; all the time aware of the fallacies of our own processing systems. Continuing the collaboration, Videocity (@videocity_bs) and Manchester School of Art (@mcrschart) present: INTO THE BLUE 7 - 9TH JULY GRAND OPENING 6PM @ THE HORSFALL 2 JERSEY ST ANCOATS M4 6J — Into The Blue is a new exhibition in collaboration between Videocity and Manchester Metropolitan University under the theme of loneliness. The series is dedicated to experiments in artists' moving image, considering the intersectional, cross-disciplinary nature of the medium. New and recent works by Irish artists are presented over three days comprising of projections, animations, installations and film, for further discussion.  The artists Myrid Carten, Orla Mc Hardy, Alice Rekab and Lynn Murphy’s works all reflect an extreme awareness of oneself and the world around them. The title ‘Into The Blue’, is a journey into creating ambient spaces which convey a sense of lacking or longing for a person or place using textiles and video. Bringing works together under this theme puts emphasis on the ephemeral and transient nature of our lives. It tentatively asks the viewer to consider vulnerability and loneliness as vessels from which to view the world.  The exhibition maps out new modes of presentation, participation and discourse to encompass the intangible, thought provoking and innovative category that is Irish contemporary moving image. The exhibition is curated by Lynn Murphy on behalf of Videocity. Thanks to Dr. Andrea Domesele, Polina Chizhova and The Horsfall. Videocity is a public funded video art project founded in Basel in 2013. It aims to bring video art to a broader audience in public spaces around the world. On Thursday 7th July, Holden Gallery will host the opening of Videocity X Manchester School of Art (@videocity_bs) "This Lonely World", a collaborative exhibition and screening exploring the themes of 'Loneliness' through work by Manchester and Ukrainian artists. The exhibition remain open from 7th July - 14 July in the Holden Gallery, and from 7th July - 28th August nearby at 70 Oxford Road. "The idea of feeling lonely in one of the UK’s most densely populated cities can feel abstract. However, Manchester’s economic and social infrastructure can often present conditions that drive it’s residents to live this shared experience. The selected works each approach the idea of loneliness in different ways, from the sense of being alone on a dancefloor, to feelings that are brought on by the sight of rain. The essence of Loneliness is one that can consume anyone." British and Ukrainian Artists present: Yana Bachynska "I'm Sick and Tired of You" 2018 Antony Barkworth-Knight "Homage to the Rain" 2019 Fiona Brehony "Human Guise" 2021 Bridget Coderc "As Elusive As Ever" 2020-21 Pat Flynn "Untitled (mobile)" 2006 Mishka Henner "Astronomical" 2011 Alina Kleytman "Responsibility" 2017 Andrew Mcdonald "Rockall" 2011 Darren Nixon "Clubbing Alone" 2021 Entry is free, tickets available at: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/videocity-x-manchester-screening-tickets-377807501407 (link in bio) Curated by Georgie Parker (@georgierosanne), Sophie Edmundson (@sophie_may9_) and Joseph Lang (@jjo.lang) Videocity (@videocity_bs) is a non-profit public art project founded in Basel (CH) in 2013.
