Do you ever include turmeric in your home-made dog food?

In my garden, I grow organic turmeric in pots and recently I harvested this small amount. I ground some of it for adding to Alfie’s food but not before adding it to a small amount of coconut oil with a pinch of black pepper to increase absorption.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a beneficial antioxidant and can also act as a mild anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-allergy remedy. Curcumin is the active ingredient and is a fat-soluble compound, which is why it is better to add it to a healthy fat such as coconut oil or fish oil, to improve absorption.

Including a tiny pinch of black pepper to the mix can also significantly increase absorption. This is due to piperine (the active compound of black pepper) preventing the liver and certain enzymes from metabolizing curcumin too rapidly. However, this action can also affect the way certain medications are processed in the body so black pepper should be avoided if your dog is taking any medicines.

Be careful if buying turmeric powder rather than growing it yourself, as it can be adulterated with cheap, toxic ingredients such as ‘red lead’. This gives it more of a red colour compared to the golden-yellow that pure turmeric should have. Nonetheless, additives such as lead chromate can increase the yellow colouring of turmeric, making it very difficult to identify unadulterated turmeric. This is why I prefer to grow my own.

Please consult your veterinarian for advice before giving herbs to your pets.
