A restful night involves more than simply getting enough hours of sleep. 🌙

Difficulty falling asleep, restless nights, stress-related sleep disturbances, and waking up unrefreshed can have different underlying causes. Nutrition plays a supporting role through nutrients involved in melatonin production, nervous system function, muscle recovery, and energy metabolism.

Certain foods, including kiwi and tart cherries, have been studied for their potential effects on sleep quality. Others, such as pumpkin seeds, turkey, and quinoa, provide nutrients involved in neurotransmitter production, muscle function, and post-exercise recovery.

What you eat cannot resolve every sleep concern, but a balanced diet, consistent meal timing, and an appropriate evening routine can help create better conditions for restorative sleep.

Which sleep concern do you experience most often?🌙

A restful night begins long before your head touches the pillow. The foods you eat throughout the day provide nutrients involved in sleep regulation, melatonin production, and nervous-system function.

Tart cherries, walnuts, and pistachios naturally contain melatonin, while turkey and milk provide tryptophan, an amino acid used to produce serotonin and melatonin. Magnesium-rich foods such as pumpkin seeds, almonds, and sunflower seeds support normal nerve and muscle function.

Kiwi has been studied for its connection to sleep quality, while warm oatmeal and Greek yogurt offer satisfying evening nourishment. A little more care in your evening routine can begin with something as simple as what you put on your plate. 🌙

A little something sweet for the days that feel especially stressful. ✨

This homemade Dark Chocolate, Pistachio & Tart Cherry Bark combines 70% dark chocolate with crunchy pistachios, tart dried cherries, pumpkin seeds, and a delicate sprinkle of flaky sea salt.

Dark chocolate contains cocoa flavanols, which have been studied for their potential effects on mood and the body’s physiological response to stress. Pistachios and pumpkin seeds provide magnesium, an essential mineral involved in normal nervous system function and stress-response regulation. Tart cherries contribute anthocyanins, antioxidant compounds that help protect cells from oxidative damage.

Ingredients
* 8 oz (225 g) dark chocolate (70% cacao)
* ⅓ cup unsalted pistachios, roughly chopped
* ¼ cup dried tart cherries, roughly chopped
* 2 tablespoons raw pumpkin seeds (pepitas)
* ¼ teaspoon flaky sea salt

Instructions
1. Prepare the baking sheet. Line a small baking sheet or tray with parchment paper.
2. Melt the chocolate. Chop the dark chocolate into small pieces and melt in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of gently simmering water, stirring until smooth. Alternatively, microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring between each.
3. Spread the chocolate. Pour the melted chocolate onto the baking sheet and spread into an even layer approximately ¼ inch thick.
4. Add the toppings. Evenly distribute the toppings over the melted chocolate. Gently press them into the surface, then sprinkle with flaky sea salt.
5. Allow to set. Refrigerate for 20–30 minutes, or until the chocolate is completely firm.
6. Break and serve. Remove from the refrigerator and break into naturally irregular pieces. Enjoy immediately or store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.

You can sleep eight hours, eat three meals, and still feel completely exhausted. That’s because tiredness isn’t always about how much rest you’re getting.

The exhaustion you feel after a workout is different from the mental fog that follows a demanding day, the sluggishness that comes with dehydration, or the fatigue you might experience during your period. Each involves different processes in the body, and nutrition can play an important role in supporting them.

Iron helps carry oxygen throughout the body, while vitamin B12 and folate support red blood cell formation. Carbs replenish energy stores, protein supports muscle recovery, and magnesium helps regulate nerve and muscle function. Even mild dehydration can affect concentration, alertness, and how energetic you feel.

But feeling tired isn’t always about needing more food or another cup of coffee. Sleep quality, emotional stress, physical activity, and underlying health conditions can all influence your energy levels.

Paying attention to when fatigue occurs, what accompanies it, and how often it returns can offer valuable clues. Sometimes the body needs nourishment, sometimes it needs recovery, and sometimes persistent exhaustion is a sign that something deserves closer attention.

Prolonged stress can affect more than your mood. Over time, it can influence sleep, appetite, digestion, muscle tension, and energy levels. During stressful periods, the body continues to rely on a steady supply of nutrients to support the nervous system, produce energy, and maintain normal cellular function.

Magnesium helps regulate nerve and muscle function, while B vitamins play important roles in energy metabolism and the production of neurotransmitters. Vitamin C and vitamin E help protect cells from oxidative stress, and omega-3 fatty acids contribute to healthy brain function.

One of the challenges of prolonged stress is that it can disrupt the very routines that help keep us nourished. Appetite may change, meals may become less consistent, and sleep may suffer. Maintaining adequate nutrition during these periods is an important part of supporting the body’s ability to function, recover, and adapt to everyday demands.

A warm cup of golden milk, with a little of the work done ahead. These homemade cubes combine turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, coconut milk, honey and a pinch of black pepper into a gently spiced concentrate you can keep in the freezer. When you’re ready for a cup, melt one or two into warm milk and whisk well. Turmeric provides curcumin, a compound studied for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Depending on the milk you choose, your cup can also provide protein and calcium to support muscles and bones.

Ingredients
* ½ cup unsweetened coconut milk, well stirred
* 2 tablespoons honey
* 1 tablespoon ground turmeric
* 1 teaspoon ground ginger
* 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
* ⅛ teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions
1. Add the coconut milk, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon and black pepper to a small saucepan.
2. Warm over low heat for 3–5 minutes, whisking until combined. Do not boil.
3. Remove from heat and stir in the honey. Let cool.
4. Divide evenly among 12 small silicone mold cavities. Freeze until solid, about 4–6 hours.
5. Transfer to an airtight freezer container and use within 2 months for best quality.

Nutrition plays a significant role in maintaining the structure and function of our organs. From the brain and thyroid to the heart, liver, kidneys, pancreas, lungs, stomach, eyes, and bones, each organ relies on specific nutrients to maintain healthy tissues and perform its physiological functions.

For example, iodine and selenium are essential for thyroid hormone production and metabolism, while omega-3 fatty acids contribute to the structure and function of brain cells. Calcium and vitamin K are involved in maintaining bone health, and nutrients such as lutein and zeaxanthin are concentrated in the retina, where they contribute to eye health. These relationships illustrate how nutrition influences different organ systems through distinct biological processes.

Eating a varied, nutrient-dense diet helps provide the nutrients involved in these processes. Many foods offer benefits across multiple organ systems, making overall dietary patterns just as important as individual food choices.

Which of these foods do you already enjoy eating regularly?

#holistichealths #health #wellness #nutrition by @holistichealths

Your organs work together every day, and many of the nutrients they rely on come from the same foods. A food you choose for its heart benefits may also provide nutrients your brain, bones, and other organs need.

Each organ has different jobs, which helps explain why variety matters. Your thyroid uses iodine to make hormones, your eyes need vitamin A for normal vision, and your bones rely on calcium, protein, and vitamin D. Fiber supports bowel regularity, while essential fats help maintain the membranes surrounding your cells. Nourishment comes from how these nutrients work together across your meals.

These foods offer ways to meet those needs through everyday eating. More of a nutrient isn’t always better, particularly with iodine and selenium. If you have kidney, thyroid, pancreatic, or digestive conditions, some choices and portions may need to be adapted to your individual needs.

Fall is the perfect season to bring a little more warmth and nourishment into the kitchen. These three soups celebrate seasonal ingredients in comforting, simple ways: Tuscan Kale & White Bean Soup, Roasted Fennel & Cauliflower Soup, and Creamy Chestnut & Mushroom Soup.

Beyond their comforting flavors, each recipe offers a different combination of nutrients. Kale and white beans provide fiber, folate, and minerals, while cauliflower contributes vitamin C and fennel provides fiber and potassium. Chestnuts offer complex carbohydrates and copper, and mushrooms contribute B vitamins and other minerals.

One of my favorite things about seasonal cooking is how a handful of ingredients can come together to make something both nourishing and satisfying. These are the kinds of recipes worth keeping close as the days grow cooler.

Tuscan Kale & White Bean Soup
1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté for 5–7 minutes until softened.
2. Stir in the diced tomatoes and cook for 2–3 minutes.
3. Add the cannellini beans and vegetable broth. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 12–15 minutes.
4. Stir in the kale and simmer for another 5–7 minutes until tender.
5. Mash a small portion of the beans into the broth for a slightly richer texture, leaving most of the beans whole. Serve warm.

Roasted Fennel & Cauliflower Soup
1. Preheat oven to 425°F.
2. Toss cauliflower, fennel, and garlic with olive oil. Roast for 25–30 minutes until tender and lightly golden.
3. Transfer to a pot with cannellini beans and vegetable broth. Simmer for 5 minutes.
4. Blend until smooth, adding water as needed. Serve warm.

Creamy Chestnut & Mushroom Soup
1. Sauté diced shallot in olive oil for 3–4 minutes.
2. Add sliced mushrooms and cook for 7–9 minutes until browned.
3. Stir in chestnuts and thyme, then add vegetable broth.
4. Simmer for 12–15 minutes until the chestnuts soften.
5. Blend until creamy, adjust the consistency with water if needed, and serve warm.

The fall season is a wonderful time to pay closer attention to the nutrients we get from seasonal eating. As the harvest changes, so does the variety of vitamins, minerals, and fiber available in our diets. Eating with the seasons can be a simple way to introduce more nutritional variety while staying connected to the natural growing cycle.

Our bodies depend on essential nutrients for everything from energy production and immune function to healthy bones, blood circulation, and cellular repair. These nutrients often work together, which is why a varied diet is more beneficial than focusing on just one vitamin or mineral.

Throughout this carousel, you’ll find the Daily Value (DV) for each nutrient and how much a serving contributes toward that amount. These percentages are useful nutritional references, not personalized requirements, and actual nutrient levels can vary with preparation. The goal isn’t to reach every daily target with a single meal, but to build a nourishing diet through variety, balance, and consistency throughout the season.

There’s something comforting about eating with the season as the days grow cooler. Autumn’s harvest offers nourishment for immune function, digestion, and steady energy, while warm meals can make it easier to stay well fed and hydrated. “Food medicine” is a way of appreciating how everyday meals help care for the body, alongside the comfort and pleasure they bring.

October’s harvest brings warmth and variety to the plate. Sweet potatoes lend their natural sweetness to homemade gnocchi, while a pumpkin spice blend adds depth to everyday recipes. Exploring seasonal ingredients is a simple way to keep meals varied, flavorful, and connected to the time of year.

(1) Homemade Sweet Potato Gnocchi with Sage

Ingredients
* 2 cups cooled, mashed roasted sweet potato (about 500 g)
* 2½–3 cups all-purpose flour (300–360 g), plus extra for dusting
* 1 large egg yolk
* 3 tablespoons olive oil
* 1 teaspoon dried sage
* ½ teaspoon salt

Instructions
1. Prick 2–3 medium sweet potatoes with a fork. Bake at 400°F for 45–60 minutes, until completely tender. Scoop out the flesh, mash smoothly, and cool. Measure 2 cups.
2. Combine the sweet potato, egg yolk, and salt. Gently incorporate 2½ cups flour. Add more a tablespoon at a time only until the dough holds together and feels soft and slightly tacky. Avoid heavy kneading.
3. Divide into six portions. Roll each on a lightly floured surface into a rope about ¾ inch thick. Cut into 1-inch pieces. Add shallow fork ridges if desired.
4. Cook one piece in gently boiling water. Once it floats, cook another 30–60 seconds, then check that it holds together and is cooked through. If it falls apart, gently incorporate a little more flour.
5. Cook the remaining gnocchi in small batches using the same method. Lift out with a slotted spoon and drain well.
6. Divide the olive oil between batches in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Cook the gnocchi for 2–3 minutes per side, until lightly golden.
7. Divide the sage between batches, adding it during the final 30 seconds. Toss gently and serve.

(2) Homemade Pumpkin Spice Blend

Ingredients
* 3 tablespoons ground cinnamon
* 2 teaspoons ground ginger
* 2 teaspoons ground nutmeg
* 1 teaspoon ground allspice
* 1 teaspoon ground cloves
