GDES 4970 || Typeface Design Proj 1: Modular Typeface

LACUNAE // Latin: gaps, empty spaces or missing parts

For this project, we were tasked with designing a typeface with constraints of specific forms. Lacunae is a display typeface inspired by the fragmented nature of human understanding. Named after the Latin word for gaps, empty spaces, or missing parts, it explores the relationship between presence and absence through spacious proportions, intentional gaps, dynamic cuts and fluid letterforms. Extended legs, crossbars, ears and unconventional spacing turn negative space into an active part of the designs creating a visual language that feels obscure, cryptic arcane and peculiar. Lacunae invites viewers to question what is present, what is missing and what exists between the forms. Designed for bolds atmospheric applications, Lacunae is suited to experimental posters, futuristic titles, editorial compositions, horror and visual identities built around mystery and ambiguity.

Design II Project II Kreher Nature Preserve Signage 🐊

In partnership with the Kreher Preserve and Nature
Center (KPNC) in Auburn, Alabama, this project invited us to design interpretive and interactive signage that deepens visitors’ connection to nature through storytelling, design, and technology.

The project merged visual communication, environmental storytelling, and digital media, emphasizing design’s power to inspire curiosity, empathy, and environmental
stewardship.

Arizona Coyotes: Frozen Potential 🏒❄️

This project is an editorial booklet developed for the Arizona Coyotes, created to educate and inform readers about a franchise that sought to establish itself in a non-traditional hockey market.

Rather than profiling a widely celebrated franchise, I chose the Coyotes because their story is often overlooked. Their history reflects resilience, reinvention, and the pursuit of growth in an unexpected environment. The booklet examines the team’s early beginnings, its rebrands and name changes, and the efforts to cultivate a hockey culture in the Arizona desert. It also highlights the influence of NHLtoArizona and the broader impact of NHL leadership in expanding the sport’s reach in Arizona.

The narrative continues through the team’s struggles, eventual relocation, and rebranding as the Utah Mammoth, while also addressing the passionate fan base that remains. The booklet concludes by examining the movement to bring professional hockey back to Arizona, including efforts led by Andrea Doan and community leaders advocating for the sport’s return.

This isn’t just about NHL hockey. It’s about proving that the game belongs in the desert

Creation Museum, Prepare to believe 🐉

The objective of this project was to design an advertising campaign for the Creation Museum’s Dinosaur and Dragon Exhibit, centered around a bold and engaging call to action: Prepare to Believe. The campaign’s goal was to spark curiosity and draw visitors to explore how the Bible speaks about dragons and dinosaurs, two fascinating subjects that bridge imagination, history, and faith.

HEALING ARTS - COLOR THEIR WORLD 🎨

Healing Arts is a non-profit Christian art organization that strives to ensure that every child facing illness, trauma, or hardship can experience the emotional comfort and joy of creativity, while also sharing the love of Jesus. It is made possible through donations from the community, hospital staff, families, and individual members of the organization.

We use art as an extension of God’s healing to bless and uplift children in hospitals. This isn’t just about art, it’s about hope, faith, and healing in every stroke. It is art as His healing hands.

Canyon Gateway Guide ❤️🧡💛🩵

The aim was to create a mobile app for a city that features a user journey of the travel planning process. “Canyon Gateway Guide” is an app for Flagstaff, Arizona that serves as an itinerary, destination, and activity tour guide. The typography and imagery embodies the culture and vibrance of the town’s rustic charm. The Sans serif, and Serif letterforms along with the red, orange, yellow and an array of blues color scheme nod to the environment and the lively culture of Flagstaff. The app’s function serves to give visitors an easy and clear way around Flagstaff. From clear directions, up to date information, and easy access to Hiking and climbing gear. The imagery used throughout was hand drawn, bright geometric forms, the typography utilizing letterforms that called back to Flagstaff’s roots and culture. The colors utilized throughout the app help give the app a bright, fun and energetic feel, using both warm and cool colors.
