“Everybody out of the pool!!” I grew up hearing this phrase almost every day, coming from my father as we were getting out of the car arriving home from school, church, soccer practice, the grocery store. I suppose he would also say it if it was actually time to get out of an actual swimming pool. It was one of those “classic dad phrases” that my sisters and I used to roll our eyes at, but then of course adopted as soon as we were the ones in the driver’s seat and prompting others to get out of the car. Today, on the third anniversary of my father’s death, I heard that phrase come out of a stranger’s mouth for the first time as he was exiting and holding the door open for his family to leave. My sister and I immediately locked eyes from across the bookstore (because of course we were in a bookstore). I happened to be in Maine for a short visit and was not even planning on visiting this store, as I had already spent too much money on books this week. But we decided last minute to go in anyway. I’m glad we did 💙 by @hollsmb
