My beautiful Nanny, Deklat, passed away in the early hours of the morning. Being 6,000 miles away, I didn’t get the chance to say a final goodbye. Our last conversation was filled with her promise that once she felt better, she would come to Arizona to see my sisters and me.
I will always treasure our phone calls and the way she’d pick up saying, “Hi bruonee dahkeet?”always calling me her son because she thought I was my mum (yes she called my mum her son). When I’d say, “Nanny, it’s me, Holly,” she’d just laugh and tell me how much I looked like her. I’ll never forget our trips to London…her giving us money for the sweet shop across the street, the taste of her delicious curries I can never to recreate, or the time spent watching EastEnders and Turkish soap operas while she explained all the drama to me. I’ll even cherish the time when she came to Arizona and when I complained about being thirsty, she turned around and said, “If you shut your mouth, you wouldn’t be thirsty!”

I am filled with gratitude for the courage my Nan showed in leaving her village in the Middle East to start a new life in London with my Grandad. Together, they didn’t just build a future… they gave me the gift of my heritage and taught me the true value of our culture.
I hope she knows the depth of the love and respect I hold for her. I have been learning Aramaic with so much excitement, looking forward to the moment I could finally surprise her and speak to her in our native tongue.
Time is a thief. It reminds us to cherish our loved ones and lean their wisdom while we can. Witnessing the love between her and my Grandad was like watching a movie, it was a rare, beautiful devotion that I am blessed to see reflected in my own parents today.
Rest in peace, Nan. I carry your language and your legacy with me until I see you again in the new system of things.
