“As a child, I often disappeared into the forest for hours and still find the experience of wandering generative. Through an expansive painting practice that combines fibers, sculpture, and collage, my work is aroused
by moments of awe and wonder in everyday encounters within our lived ecology. I translate observations within the natural world into hybrid works that focus on the roles biodiversity, sensorial experience, and
transformation play in building a more verdant future to deepen connection, sensitivity, and care for our environment.” - Cahill

Holly Cahill is a Chicago-based visual artist working between painting, fibers, sculpture, and collage. Her process-oriented, sculptural abstractions gather impressions of natural phenomena that explore themes
of biodiversity, transformation, and sensorial experience. Considering fabric’s foundational role in painting, she works with materials expansively, combining strategies drawn from painting alongside various textile traditions.
Cahill received her MFA from the University of Cincinnati (2004) and a BFA from Syracuse University (1998). Most recently, her work has been included in exhibitions at Secrist|Beach, Hyde Park Art Center, 65GRAND, and
Epiphany Center for the Arts (Chicago, IL). She has been awarded residencies throughout the United States and Canada at Ragdale (Lake Forest, IL), Chicago Artists Coalition (Chicago, IL), Vermont Studio Center (Johnson, VT), Banff Centre (Banff, Canada), and Ox-Bow (Saugatuck, MI), among others. Her work has been featured in several publications, including LUXE Interiors + Design, New American Paintings, Chicago
Tribune, and Inside\Within.

I’m thrilled to have work included in Holding Multitudes, now on view at the Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts in Fond du Lac, WI, opening this Friday, Sept. 25, 2026, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Holding Multitudes brings together the work of 11 artists from Praxis: a collective cohort formed to support, challenge, and share an understanding of the creative studio practices of its members. I feel very fortunate to be part of this remarkable group of women from Chicago and beyond, including..!

Holly Cahill
Vanessa Filley
Tanya Gill
Rita Grendze

From the curatorial statement:

“Working across a wide range of mediums, we explore ideas that extend beyond technique and material. Our work touches on domestic labor, ritual, ecology, memory, vulnerability, and perseverance. While each artist here approaches these subjects differently, connections emerge through the ways they collect, repeat, transform, repair, and tend to materials.”

The exhibition is curated by Tanya Gill and Rita Grendze, with Lois Bielefeld as our project lead and many others pitching in to help along the way. All the photo documentation here was done by Lois Bielefeld.

If you’re in Wisconsin or traveling there soon, I hope you stop by. The exhibition will be on view until October 29th. taken in Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts by @hollyacahill

It's an honor to have my work featured in the latest New American Paintings issue of Midwestern artists juried by Stephanie Fox Knappe PhD, the Sanders Sosland Senior Curator of Global Modern and Contemporary Art and Head of American Art at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, MO, among so many wonderful artists.

In Fox Knappe's introductory comments she writes, "Whether geographical, psychological, liminal, or completely fantastical, place in the paintings on the pages that follow informs narrative and shapes identity. It underpins abstraction; it evokes the familiar, invites us into, or conjures, the strange, and holds us at a distance. It signals personal, cultural, and sociopolitical meaning, holding memories and offering portals of possibility."

Thank you, Stephanie Fox Knappe and @newamericanpaintings. Cover art is by Song Watkins Park. Photos by @tomvaneynde. by @hollyacahill

You may have noticed that my feed is full of dancers lately!

Something truly remarkable is happening this Friday and Saturday evening at 7 PM at the Ruth Page Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Chicago. A dance performance created by Still Inspired drawing inspiration from my practice will be happening with an incredible team of choreographers, Brain Hare and Laura Thurston, and a group of fantastic dancers: Alex Bellocq, Mark Gonzalez, Megan Hansen, Lauren Reed, Abigail Stachnik, and Tiana Thompson.

This dance performance, OLD LONG. SINCE., draws from an ever evolving body of my work that spans back to 2011 and traces many events in my life and practice.

At a time when the arts are facing so many challenges, to experience this type of gesture, reaching across disciplines and uplifting artists in the process is truly moving.

I hope you can join us for what I know will be a wonderful performance!

📸Pictured here are choreographers Laura Thurston and Brian Hare of Still Inspired in the months leading up to this weekend on a site visit to the theatre.
